Some people are planners, but others leave everything to the last minute. I'm a planner; always have been and I'll probably always be one, which comes in handy during the holiday shopping season. According to Glamour magazine, 23 percent of women polled said they shop for gifts a month in advance, but six percent admitted to waiting until the day of to get their gifts purchased, wrapped and under the tree. Since so many of you consider shopping a form of therapy I thought you could benefit from a new test that determines whether or not you're considered a shopaholic. Since compulsive buying is linked to low self-esteem, depression, anxiety and stress, it's a good idea to determine if you should be leaving those credit cards at home!

As we all know, there's a difference between buying and over-the-top spending, which has the ability to wreak havoc on your life. Those who are considered compulsive buyers spend money on things regardless of the need for them or what's in their bank account, and according to Kent Monroe, a marketing professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, "Compulsive buying is an addiction that can be harmful to the individual, families, relationships. It is not just something that only afflicts low-income people."

Sometimes when you're feeling blue — you got demoted or broke up with your boyfriend — the smallest thing can pep you up, just like that. For some it's ordering your favorite comfort food, for others it's splurging on that top you had your eye on but couldn't justify buying, and for still others, it's as simple as calling up your best friend for a good old fashioned vent session. Treating yourself always makes you feel better, and while I'm not an advocate of giving into your vices every time the going gets tough, I admit I like to do a little of all three when I've had a bad day! And as fun as it can be to try on one thing after another, sometimes an honest second opinion from your special someone can come in handy. Though I've never been one to dress for a boyfriend, it sure does feel good when he looks at you with longing eyes because you're wearing something he loves. I recently went to a wedding and was horrified by the bride's choice of dress for her bridesmaids. The cut (strapless and tea-length), the color (a pea green with yellow trim), and the material (think loads and loads of tulle and taffeta) were truly horrendous. The Price you Have to Pay

I was the maid of honor in my friend's wedding last summer. This was her second wedding but she acted like it was her first in every way that you could imagine. Once she met her husband, just a little under a year later, she had a rock on her finger.

Then came the multiple engagement parties (one from each set of parents) multiple bridal showers, couples showers, etc... After months of planning they decided to scrap a conventional wedding and opt for a destination wedding but gave almost no time for her friends to make travel arrangements.

They chose to tie the knot in Hawaii, in the middle of summer. Since that is a very busy season for the islands, all the rooms had four night minimums, the air fare was outrageous, and on top of all of that, she chose a $450 bridesmaid dress!

Since I was her maid of honor, I obviously had to attend, with a smile. I put on a happy face, dragged my husband begrudgingly, and tried to make the best of the situation. I was happy for her after all and she was exuding excitement!

They have been married for only six months, and she recently called to tell me things aren't working out. She has decided against counseling and has filed for divorce. While I am there for my friend, and feel for her during this time, I am not the least bit surprised it didn't work out.

I am finding myself livid that I spent so much money on her wedding festivities to have it not work out so soon after. I know she had the best intentions and got carried away with all the excitement, but do I at least get my wedding gift back, a refund for my bridesmaid dress, or anything like that? Am I being a bad friend by feeling like I wasted a ton of money? Cheapskate Chandrelle

I have a friend who is on my last nerve. She recently got engaged to a man who struck it big... really big in the stock market. At the time they were dating and ever since their engagement, he had money, but nothing like what he has now. Post engagement, my friend quit her job and started living the life of a rich housewife, almost throwing her new found money in all of her friend's faces.

Recently, her husband got transferred to New York to work on Wall Street. They bought a penthouse apartment in an extremely fancy neighborhood, and she continuously carries on about who her decorator is, what kind of furniture she is buying, and how great her new life in the big city is.

I am from a middle to upper class family. I work very hard everyday, and I live with my fiance who also takes his job extremely seriously. Money, Money, Money

Dear Sugar
I have recently become engaged and will be married this September. I know there are going to be a lot of changes in my life due to two lives becoming one and I am excited for the new adventure. My fiance and I have our money issues pretty much worked out and have agreed that as we communicate, we will be fine monetarily.

We have recently opened a joint account together to keep our wedding money organized as we are paying for a large portion of the big day. The problem is that he is so anal and paranoid that something is going to happen to the money that is insistent upon be not carrying my check book or ATM card in my purse anymore.

He has told me that he is not worried about keeping up with our expenditures, rather he is worried about someone stealing my purse and having access to the checks. While I understand his concern about all our money being in one place for such an important occasion, his level of anxiety is a little concerning.

If someone were to get a hold of a check, the bank would know if it was stolen and we would be able to get reimbursed. What were to happen if I were to be stranded and needed to get money out of my bank account? How can I get him to lighten up without this ballooning into a huge issue? Penny Pincher Paulette

I am a teacher and I am starting my first job this January. Since I have been in school for so many years, all I have in my wardrobe are jeans and sneakers. It is high time I go shopping but I am stumped on what type of shoes I should wear as I will be on my feet most of the day.

I don't think I want to wear high heels, but I can't wear flats because I am short (5'3") and I want to have some air of authority. Is My Engagement Ring Fake?

I am so excited about my recent engagement. My soon to be husband is wonderful, generous and as charming as can be. His proposal was everything I had dreamed of and the ring was perfect; I couldn't ask for anything more.

A few days after my fiancé proposed, I went to have my ring appraised and insured. I was stunned when I got a call this morning from the appraiser who told me that my stunner was a cubic zirconia! Purchasing a fake diamond is so not like my fiancé. He has wonderful taste and he's been saving for two years for the ring so I know that he can afford it.

I am concerned that perhaps he got ripped off and doesn't know that it's not real. Or do you think he bought a fake ring and hoped that I would never find out? I love my fiancé and my ring so much. Bad Friend, Even Worse Bridesmaid

I was recently married and have spent the last few weeks putting away my wedding gifts and writing thank you notes. During this process, I have realized who came to our wedding and who has not given us a gift (rude, but expected of certain guests). One of those people happens to be one of my bridesmaids. Please keep in mind that I paid for all the bridesmaid dresses, their manicures/pedicures, hotel rooms, hairstyling for the day, and a bridesmaid gift!

The only thing my bridesmaids had to pay for were their shoes. All the girls reimbursed me months ago, but the bridesmaid that didn't bring a gift has yet to pay me, even though I have asked her nicely several times. To make matters worse, this same girl held up the dress order because she waited until the last minute to get measured, never thanked me for a fabulous birthday party I threw for her, and was the last to arrive to the wedding sight the day of my wedding.

Clearly I need a break from this friend, but how do I get my money back that she owes me for the bridesmaid shoes? I feel she needs to know how terrible she has been acting but I don't want to stoop to her level. Do you have advice? Irritated Izzie

My husband and I are friends with a very wealthy man. He just broke off his engagement and took us, another couple and some (handsome male friends) on a trip of a lifetime. We spent ten days in his five room suite in a fancy hotel in the Costa del Sol in Spain with every whim of ours being attended to. This was originally the vacation that he had planned for his honeymoon.

While on the trip, he proceeded to buy the two of us women (we’re both married) luxurious gifts. He’s such a generous man who is extremely kind hearted. Since he’s not particularly good looking and extremely effeminate it’s difficult for him to meet women. I know what you are thinking—sweet rich guy can’t get a girl, but it’s true. He just can’t seem to find someone genuine. We really connected and since the trip, we’ve met for lunch and a few shopping dates.

My husband isn’t threatened by him because he knows that I am not attracted to him, however, he has expressed that he thinks it’s strange how a man is constantly showering another man’s wife with gifts. My husband actually thinks that he might be gay and can't understand why he'd like to shop so much. I guess that I’ve just turned my cheek to the strangeness of it all because I am really enjoying getting spoiled. Just last week he bought me a gorgeous oriental silk rug for $25,000. I know that he’s got plenty of money to spare and these sprees of ours are as fun for me as they are for him.

Also, I am an art dealer with a specialty in oriental art. During our last lunch out, he handed me a job offer letter. He's currently building a 45 million dollar hotel in Paris and has asked me to supply it with all of the art. I was elated. This is my dream project and I couldn’t wait to begin. I have been working on his hotel remotely for just about two weeks now and the plans are going marvelously. This is the one job that could really propel my career.

Unfortunately, last night I got a call from a girlfriend of mine that has left me feeling upset and unnerved all day. She and her husband were having dinner with him last night at his home. I guess the wine was flowing pretty heavily and when her husband got up to use the restroom, he confessed his undying love for me and how he couldn't wait to finally get me to Paris alone.

What should I do about continuing to have him in my life now? Can he and I still be friends? Can I continue to work on his hotel? Do I need to give back all of my gifts? And lastly, do I need tell my husband? Disappointed Dara

Protect Your Blue Suede Shoes

I've saved the best for last; shopping. It's part of the culture here. Many of the world's finest designers are French and Paris is the mecca of Fashion Houses. People talk about the fabulous shopping in Paris, and now I know why. It's amazing - I've never seen anything like it!

Nowhere else in the world can you find solid blocks of couture like in Paris. They've got all the big flagships like: Dior, Chanel, Louis, Yves Saint Laurent ... and the most darling little boutiques. Even those who claim to hate shopping, can't resist at least a little bit of browsing.

SHOPPING:
Galleries Lafayette - 100,000 people walk through these doors every day (closed Sundays). One author wrote about how when she dreams of shopping, she’s often in Galleries Lafayette. This is a shopoholics haven with over 100 of boutiques under the same roof. 40 Blvd Haussmann

Rue de St. Honore du Fauborg - Think died and gone to heaven. This is what you imagine when you think of the shopping in Paris. I'm talking sick, sick fashion houses all along one gorgeously manicured windy street. And did I mention that July was sale season?

Avenue Montaigne - Most of Galleries Lafayette have it's own stores along this street. It's in a great location; by the Champs Elysees and near the chic hotels. It's definitely worth walking around. Dior is basically an entire avenue.

Champs Elysees - For this to be the most renown street in Paris, I wasn't impressed. It was very crowded and filled with all kinds of chain stores. Ever been to 34th street in NYC? It kind of reminded me of that. It does however house Europe's largest boutique, Louis Vuitton.

Colette - Again, this renown boutique did not live up to it’s standards for me. Perhaps it was the collection that it was carrying at the time, but the selection was sparse and the staff was rude. 2, rue Cambon

Bon Marche - Basically the Bloomingdales of Paris only a little bit edgier (think more like Barneys). I went and it was closed, but it was OK. The weather was too nice to be inside a department store. Wait, did I really just say that? 24 rue de Sevres

Diptyque - This upscale candle company is located in a great area. The prices at this store are also about 1/3rd less than in the US which makes these candles, great gifts. 34 Blvd Saint Germaine

So that was Paris. I went 8 years ago and did not have the same appreciation for it at all. I once thought the people to be snooty and rude, and the city to be old and hard to navigate. It’s strange how time can change your perspective. This trip was out of this world and I can’t wait to return. Vive la France

Bargain Hunting For A New School Wardrobe

In my day, I'd suggest The Gap, but now, $150 isn't going to get you much even there. I'd try these three stores: H&M, Old Navy and Forever 21. These trendy chain stores are targeted to your age group and have lower priced clothing that is both conservative and fashionable.

Lastly, do you have any Marshalls to TJ Maxx stores in your area? You can find great things on the sale racks for $20 and under if you bargain hunt.

Stock up on basics like a black pair of pants, a black skirt and a plain shift dress that you can mix, match and accessorize. I think that your $150 will take you the farthest at these stores. I am sure you've already got your chic look covered, so try and buy more chapel pieces. You will feel uncomfortable if you are under dressed.

It's a super cute beach hat. But like everyone is suggesting, it may actually have come from her grandmother since it's no where to be found. It's definitely the style of a coach hat,but they don't seem to make anything flowery like this.

I happen to think this floral print fedora is very sweet for the beach

Blackberry's (not to be mistaken for blackberries - the fruit) are better than Trios. I would go over to Cingular and check out the four models they carry so that you can have e-mail and web browsing in the same kind of smartphone.

All of the models have e-mail, internet and phone services in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. They have a full PC style keyboard(33 keys)and a talk time up to four hours. They are small, light(about 5 ounces), and the original model costs about $1150 right now. The newer ones out now have a newer bluetooth capability and a color screen.

The newest pimped out model runs about $300 now and is loaded with speakerphone, GPRS, EDGE, GSM and bluetooth compatibility. It's a little bit sleeker looking, it's got a larger and color screen display and it sort of acts like a HP Compaq or Palm Pilot with all of it's new organizational tools. It also has a 35 style keyboard.

The Treo sells for $400. I happen to think that it looks cool - and I won't lie to you, the differences between the two are slim. The Treo is made by Palm and it's loaded with similar/comparable features as the Blackeberry.

I guess it really just depends on what your needs are. Either of these are an excellent choice, but I would go with Cingular's Blackberry. I think they have better customer service - and why pay more when you don't need to.

If you are desperate to hang onto one last bottle, you can bid on one on e-bay here ! Seems like this is one hot ticket of a fragrance. Since it's discontinuation in 2005 people have been bidding like mad for it. If you've decided that it's time for you to move onto another scent, try:

Dolce & Gabanna's Light Blue. It's very floral and light - perfect for summertime and it's definitely something that you could wear everyday.

Anna Sui's Secret Wish. This scent is fruity, light a little bit woodsy and sensuous - great for regular use.

Lastly, try out Cacharel's Promesse . This perfume reeks of romance. It's actually delicious! It consists of blackberry, bergamot and jasmine and is both perfect for day and/or night.
