There are many amazing moments in the beginning of a new relationship, but there is an equal number of awkward and mildly terrifying moments, too. Learning about his sexual history and giving him yours, including your number of sexual partners and any STI exposure risks, can be very revealing.

Though often there is shame if you feel inexperienced or guilt if you feel too experienced, sharing this information is important for the emotional growth in your relationship and for your sexual health. But it's difficult to decide when this conversation should take place — certainly not on the first date, but hopefully before the first sexual encounter. So ladies, when is the right time to bring up your sexual history?

You've Got Mail (and an STI)

There may be nothing as awkward as informing a previous sexual partner that you've exposed him or her to an STI, but it's also one of the best things that you can do. Unfortunately, many people think that shame outweighs doing what's right, and thus, STIs continue to thrive. Now InSpot.org, a site based in San Francisco, assists people in anonymously notifying their partners about possible exposure to an STI through email. According to Reuters:

InSpot.org uses the E-Card model to send messages like "I'm So Sorry" to notify people that they may have been exposed to a disease. It also offers information about getting tested and treatment.

The goal of the site is to reduce the prevalence of diseases like syphilis through more timely treatment and awareness. Okay, I know the e-card model does seem kind of tacky, and yes, we'd all rather have the person just tell us directly, but I think an anonymous email is better than no email at all. Do you agree? Would you use this if the circumstances were right?

Year-End Poll Results: Sex Partners and One-Night Stands

As the year comes to a close, it's hard, if you're single, not to reflect on how many new sexual partners you had this year. If you're a little wilder, you might have even had a few one-night stands. So as part of my year-end coverage, I decided to pry a little bit and poll you about these topics.

It comes as no surprise to me that DearSugar readers lead healthy but responsible sex lives: 56 percent of you had one to five new partners in 2007, 38 percent had none, and very few people had more than 10 new partners.

As for one-night stands, the overwhelming majority of you (71 percent) didn't have any in 2007, while 20 percent of readers had one to four one-night stands. Are you guys surprised by the results?

We all have a history - but have you noticed that people are most curious about your sexual history? While it's important to know if your partner is healthy and disease free, knowing how many notches he has on his belt is still up for debate. Whether you have a high number or low number of sexual partners, opening up that can of worms is bound to cause an argument, so what I want to know is, do you lie when someone asks you how many people have shared your bed?Source
