What Do You Consider Beautiful?

If you tuned into Oprah yesterday, you'd see just how true the statement "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is. Mara Schiavocampo of NBC news traveled around the word to find out how different cultures define beauty. She discovered that big butts and ankles are considered beautiful in Mauritania, a perfect nose is ideal for Iranian women, and straight hair and pale skin is what Japanese women go to great lengths to achieve. Since the American standard of beauty is different from those around the globe, it's more clear to me than ever just how many of us succumb to the pressures of societal norms. Of course, it's all about what makes us feel good from the inside out, but tell me ladies, what do you consider beautiful?

Thank goodness for TiVo! Just like many of you probably did, I raced home yesterday to catch Brad Pitt on Oprah. I wasn't digging his mustache per se, but my ears perked up when I heard him talk. When did he get that accent? I've always been a sucker for a man with a foreign accent, but Brad's southern drawl definitely piqued my interest. Are you with me on this one? Are men with accents a turn-on or a turn-off?

Jennifer Aniston sat down with her good friend Oprah yesterday to talk about her December Vogue article, her new movie, and of course, her love life. She went on to squash some of the never-ending rumors, but she also voluntarily stated that she considers herself to be lucky in love, even though it may not look how it's supposed to! Love is multifaceted and while it's easier for some to find than others, I do think there are certain people that just get lucky in that way. Are you one of them? Source

Why Do People Cheat?

Earlier this week I came across an article from The Huffington Post examining why men cheat. Referencing a recent Oprah that showcased Dr. M. Gary Neuman and his book, The Truth About Cheating, and citing Neuman's research that cheating isn't always about sex, the article determined that cheating for men is a result of feeling unappreciated at home.

Though my own thoughts on this are still undecided, I couldn't help but think of it yesterday when clips from Peter Cook's interview with Barbara Walters were released. Cook and Brinkley went through a bitter divorce in which Brinkley publicly exposed Cook's affair with an 18-year-old, and it seems as though he's looking to explain himself. According to Us Magazine:

Asked what he wanted out of his marriage, Cook tells Walters, "a little acknowledgment, a little attention, a little thank you every now and then for my efforts . . ."

Cook seems to echo The Huffington Post article and Dr. Neuman's sentiments about lack of appreciation rather than a sexual need being the reason to stray. But I'm not convinced just yet. I also think this argument is problematic since it puts blame on the person who didn't cheat. But I want to hear from all of you. Why do you think people cheat? If you've been cheated on or have cheated on someone else, does the notion of appreciation ring true?

When it comes to the complicated world of dating, don't you sometimes wish you had a manual to help answer the hard questions, or tell you what to do when the going gets tough? I'm married and exhausted. Sex or sleep? According to Paul Glovinsky, PhD, the answer is both. Since sex can leave women stimulated and unable to fall asleep right away, but men as sleepy as a baby, Glovinsky advises couples to carve out time to get busy during their energy peak, whether it's in the morning, right after work, after dinner, or whatever time works for them.

My clock is ticking. Settle for the guy I care about, or hold out for The One, who may never show up? I've said many times before and psychotherapist Ken Page agrees: do not settle, especially when kids are involved; you both could end up paying the price later down the line. Page feels that,"If someone is your match in 75 to 85 percent of the things that are important to you — values, character strengths, how he treats other people, emotional fitness — that's not settling," but I always suggest following your instincts. And remember, no one is perfect!

I've met a great guy. He never calls. Should I call him? The author of The MANual Steve Santagati and I agree on this one, too. He says yes you can call him, but let him initiate the plans. If you put him on the spot, he might get too intimidated.

What Kind of Pill Would You Concoct?

I don't know about you, but I couldn't be more excited that Oprah is back from her Summer vacation! If you caught yesterday's episode, Dr. Oz stopped by to talk medicine and answer viewers questions about some recent headlines; one of which was a pill to make you exercise. While the jury is still out as to whether or not it works, it got me thinking about miracle drugs. Just think how much easier our lives would be if we really could take a little pill to encourage us to work out, or for the sake of having fun take a dating pill, a beauty pill, a motivation pill, even a career building pill? So if you could develop something like that, tell me, what would you concoct?

12 Steps to Falling in Love

For some, being single and dating is a lot of fun, but for others, being single can be frustrating, lonely, and just plain exhausting. I think both have their pros and cons, but if you've been feeling unlucky in love, Rabbi Shmuley's (of Oprah fame) 12 steps to falling in love might be of some help.

Admit you can't fall in love: Since many people couple up to avoid loneliness, Shmuley feels that admitting the reason why you want to fall in love will help gain realistic expectations.
Get help: Opening up about wanting to, but having a difficult time finding love will help alleviate some of the pressure and burden.
Heal the love wounds: Make amends with former lovers you may have hurt in the past. Accepting responsibility for your actions will help you fall in love again in the future.
Take your love pulse: Really ask yourself how loving you are. Shmuley feels that you cannot love specifically if you don't also love generally.

What Was the Most Trivial Part of Your 20s?

The ladies from Sex and the City were on Oprah yesterday and while their visit was mainly all about the movie, they touched upon some other hot topics as well, age being one of them. All the women, including Oprah herself, were in agreement when saying their 20s were overrated, in fact Kristen Davis went so far to say that she was "kind of unhappy" in her 20s and she didn't know who she was. As someone that's about to be 30 myself, (gasp!!) I'm intrigued to see what all the hype's about. I get that your 20s is a confusing time, a time of self-discovery and trial and error, but I've got to be honest, my 20s weren't all that bad! Of course, I had my fair share of ups and downs, but all in all, I can't complain. So to all you 30-plus women out there, what was the most trivial time in your 20s? Are you with the SATC's girls — were your 20s not all that great in comparison to where you are now?

Whenever I see talk shows or read interviews with celebrities, I constantly hear them say that they feel better with age. Oprah has said on numerous occasions that she really came into herself at age 50, and the younger generation strongly suggests that 30 is when you have the confidence to be the real you. Sure, the older I get the more secure I feel, but who likes getting old?Demi Moore proves that age shouldn't get you down, as do Madonna, Michelle Pfeiffer, and we can't leave out George Clooney! I might be late in the game on this one, but I was catching up on my DVR last night and caught Monday's episode of Oprah. Drew Barrymore was one of the guests and she was gushing about her new love Justin Long, among many other important topics. When Oprah asked her how this relationship is different from previous ones, part of Drew's response was that she has grown up and decided who she wants to be. Although the question of who do you want to be when you grow up is an age-old one, it means something so different when you're already an adult. Her statement struck a chord with me, so I thought I'd throw it out to all of you. Since we are constantly growing and maturing, do tell: Who do you want to be when you grow up?

I recently saw an episode of Oprah where she interviewed Mitch Albom, the author of For One More Day. It's a brilliant book that was made into a movie that explores the question, "What would you do if you could spend one more day with a lost loved one?"
