I recently went off the pill because my husband and I want to start trying to get pregnant this Spring. I thought it would be a good idea to let my body adjust, so we've been using condoms ever since. Though I've been ready for a while now, my husband wants to wait until we're more financially stable, which I completely understand. One night last month while we were having sex, I kept thinking to myself that it didn't feel like the condom was still on — it just felt too good. When he took it off, he didn't say anything so I just assumed it was still intact. I went to the bathroom to freshen up and checked the trash, just in case, and I was right — the condom had torn. Something inside of me got excited — there was now a possibility that I could become pregnant! I didn't say anything to him about that night, and just this morning, I realized my period was late. I took a pregnancy test and it showed I am in fact pregnant! I'm thrilled, but at the same time, I'm guilt ridden for not being honest. The current state of the economy has made us even more financially unstable and I'm petrified to tell my husband this news. I would hate to think that he would have wanted me to take the morning after pill, so my train of thinking is what he won't know won't hurt him. Is it forgivable to keep my knowledge of the broken condom my little secret? Source

Condoms are an easy choice to stay protected when you're not in a committed relationship, but I've been hearing more and more married couples say that condoms are their preferred method of birth control, too. Of course to each their own, but isn't one of the perks of being in a committed marriage (one that's clear of STIs) that you don't have to fuss with interrupting the moment to find a condom? Virginia Pharmacy Won't Carry Contraception

I've heard of Roman Catholics not believing in birth control, but now a new Roman Catholic pharmacy in Virginia doesn't believe in selling it. Divine Mercy Care Pharmacy isn't the only one letting their faith lead their business. Seven other pharmacies across the nation are doing the same. They're refusing to sell any forms of contraception, including condoms, birth control pills, and the morning-after pill, even if the person has a prescription.

States are dealing with this issue by passing laws that require drugstores to go against their religious beliefs and fill the prescriptions. Right now though, in the state of Virginia, these laws don't exist and devout Catholic-based drugstores are allowed to deny birth control to anyone who walks in their store.

After Hours at the Olympics — Who Would Have Thought!

When I think of Olympic athletes, I assume that after participating in their sport they are either eating, sleeping, or spending time with loved ones. According to The Times, though, they are actually getting busy! That's right, they are having sex either with each other or their spectators! Matthew Syed, a former english table tennis player explained it best: "I played my first Games in Barcelona in 1992 and got laid more often in those two and a half weeks than in the rest of my life up to that point . . . Barcelona was, for many of us Olympic virgins, as much about sex as it was about sport."

If you think about it, it actually makes perfect sense. They all have hot bodies, they have adrenaline pumping through their veins, and they are thrown together in the Olympic village so many of them take on the mindset of what happens at the Olympics, stays at the Olympics! In the 1988 Games in Seoul, there were so many used condoms found on the roofs of the British team's residences that the British Olympic Association banned outdoor sex. Since people didn't obey, organizers in Beijing thought it would be more effective to simply pass out thousands of free condoms to the athletes.

Of course, winning an Olympic medal comes with a sense of power and sex appeal, but I would have never guessed these athletes were getting as busy as they are! Are you surprised by this as much as I am?

Tips For Sex in the Car

Whether you think it's sexy to get it on in the backseat of your boyfriend's car or it's the only private place you can find because you both live with roommates, it can be a little awkward. So here are some tips to make your automobile makeout session as comfy and pleasurable as possible:

Park in a secluded area. No, I'm not saying you should drive to some sketchy parking lot or abandoned factory; just choose a place that's private so you don't have to worry about unexpected people walking by and disturbing your alone time.
Bring a blanket along so you can lay it on the seat. Not only will it make you feel more like you're at home in a real bed, but it'll also prevent your skin from sticking to the seats if they're made of leather. It's also nice to bring another blanket or sheet along in case you get cold or if you need to cover yourself up quickly (just in case your secluded place is not secluded enough!).
Have your birth control ready, if you need it. Stopping to put on a condom tends to put a hold on the mood anyway, but it'll be even worse if you have to stop and look around to figure out where they are. So before you start getting busy, put the condoms in the backseat pocket or in the side door.
Make a CD or playlist on your iPod of romantic tunes to play. This may help to get you in the mood and may make you feel less like you're in a car.

Trichomoniasis: The Most Common, Curable STI

Just when you thought you knew about every STI in the book, trichomoniasis shows up. Trichomoniasis or "trich" is found more often in women than men, but affects both sexes. Caused by a parasite passed during vaginal intercourse, like most STIs, it's usually preventable with proper protection. Carriers of trich typically show very few symptoms. Women who do show symptoms will usually notice them within five to 28 days after exposure.

Although birth control is absolutely worth every penny, it's not exactly cheap. Depending on the method you're using, you can end up spending $15 to $30 a month — $180 to $360 a year, which is no small chunk of change no matter how much money you make.

So where do you stand on who should pay for it? Some of my friends split the cost evenly with their significant other. I also have a few friends who have a deal that whoever uses it or wears it pays for it; the women pay for the Nuvaring, the pill, the patch, or the IUD, and the guys pay for the condoms.

So I'm sure you're sick of me talking about HPV, the STI that can cause genital warts and certain types of cervical cancer, but I'm not finished yet. There's also another type of HPV you should know about — anal HPV — that's just as common as cervical HPV.

No, anal HPV isn't only contracted through anal sex, although women who engage in this act are definitely more at risk, but so are women who are young, white, with lower levels of education and income, and a history of having multiple sexual partners. It can also be passed through sexual play (by using fingers or sharing sex toys). It's thought that oral sex may also transmit anal HPV, although doctors unfortunately aren't clear about all the ways it can be transmitted.

My problem, though, is that both of us are nervous to be sexually active again, especially since when we conceived, we were using a condom and I was on the pill. Neither of us wants to be in this position again so do you have any advice for us? Was this just a fluke?

Sex Myth: Tighter Means Better

If you or your partner have ever thought that wearing condoms that fit tightly will prevent pregnancy better; that it'll stop sperm from getting out, you're wrong. This is a huge misconception, and could actually cause an unwanted pregnancy. You see if the condom is too tight, the friction of having sex could actually break the material.

Polyurethane and latex condoms are already 85 percent effective at preventing pregnancy, so if used correctly, you can't make them any more effective (unless you use them with another form of birth control such as the Nuvaring).

It's also important to remember that when a guy puts on a condom, he needs to leave a little space at the tip so when he ejaculates, there's room for the semen inside the condom. If it's is pulled on too tightly, it could get overstretched and cause the condom to break, or sperm could overflow out the top. Be sure to follow the directions on the box when using condoms, and make sure the guy always wears the correct size.

Nobody wants to have an unexpected pregnancy. We do all we can not to get pregnant, and some of us even come up with ideas of our own to prevent becoming a premature mom.

I'll never forget when my best friend from high school lost her virginity (she was the first one in our circle of friends). She said that she wanted to be extra sure not to get pregnant, so she made her boyfriend wear two condoms instead of one. Bad idea! While it's true that condoms are 85 percent effective at preventing pregnancy, double bagging (as it's sometimes called) does not make condoms more effective. In fact, wearing two condoms causes tension and friction, so tearing is more likely to happen. Plus, two condoms can be bunchy, which will cause it to not fit properly. If the condom doesn't fit right, it's more likely to slip off, and semen can potentially get inside the vagina causing pregnancy.

Dear's Advice: Stick to using one condom, the right way. If you hate condoms, use another effective form of birth control to make sure you stay pregnant free.

News to Me: 1 in 10 Men Have Overlapping Sex Partners

Call me old-fashioned, but I only date one guy at a time. That means I only have one sexual partner at a time, and I thought that was what most people did. Apparently not. According to this ABC News story, a new study shows that one out of every 10 men, observed over the course of a year, had sexual relationships with more than one woman at a time.

If these guys are having sex with a bunch of different women, those poor unsuspecting ladies probably have no idea. Not only is it disrespectful — and pretty sleazy if you ask me — but the practice also may be contributing to the spread of HIV and other STIs. Of course, using condoms is a great way to prevent HIV and other STIs from spreading, but unfortunately, they don't protect you 100 percent.

I hope this study will increase awareness about how important it is to practice safe sex. My advice: Before you get intimate with a new partner, be sure that both of you get tested for all STIs, especially HIV.

Barrier methods of birth control are great options if you don't want to take hormones to prevent pregnancy. They work by blocking sperm from entering your uterus, which prevents fertilization.

The cervical cap is similar to the diaphragm, it's just a little smaller. It's made of latex and is shaped like a thimble. When you insert it into your vagina, it fits snugly over your cervix and suction and your vaginal muscles keep the cap in place.

Advantages:

After you get fitted for one by your gyno, you can keep it for up to a year or more.
It's reusable.
There are no hormones involved, and it won't affect your menstrual cycle.
It won't affect future fertility.

I just recently lost my virginity and my first time hurt a lot. I thought things would get easier after that but my boyfriend and I are still having difficulties. The subsequent 4 or 5 times we've tried having sex since have all ended up with me telling him to stop because it hurt so much. I always end up feeling really sore afterwards too. Condoms are a pretty popular form of birth control because they help prevent you from getting STIs and from getting preggers. This is true when they are used properly, and when they don't break. I recommend using latex condoms, or polyurethane ones if you have a latex allergy. It's also important to know that Natural Lamb condoms don't protect against STIs, but will protect you against pregnancy.

So how can you prevent the dreaded "condom breaking" nightmare? Here are some very important tips to keep in mind:

When the guy puts the condom on, he must make sure to leave some space at the top (the tip) so there's room for the semen he ejaculates. If you don't, pressure can build up and cause the condom to break.
Friction is a bad thing when it comes to sex - it feels bad and can put too much pressure on the condom. Make sure that the woman is lubricated, either naturally (it happens when the woman is aroused), or with the help of a personal lubricant. Just so you know, oil-based lubes (like baby oil or Vaseline) can break the down the latex, so onlly water-based lubricants (like Astroglide or ones made byKY) should be used with latex condoms. Oil-based lubes are however safe to use with plyurethane condoms like Avanti brand, since they are made out of non-latex material. You could also try using lubricated condoms.
2 condoms are NOT better than 1. "Double Bagging" as it's called can actually cause more friction, which can cause rippage.
Always use a new condom each time you have sex. The package should be opened carefully, men- don't use your teeth- and the condom should be slowly unrolled all the way down the shaft of his penis.

Dear Sugar,

I had sex one month and three weeks ago, while I had my period, and the condom ripped. One month later, when I was supposed to get my period, I never got it. Another three weeks have passed, and I still have not gotten it. I feel all the symptoms of pregnancy: tired, breasts hurting, lower back hurting, cramping, nausea (non-stop). Could I be pregnant even though I had sex on my period? Could there be another reason why I haven't gotten my period? I was on birth control pills for about a year but I got off about four months ago. Can that affect it? My periods have been fine and on time since then, EXCEPT NOW! Please answer and just to let you know, I'm 17 years old.
