There's a general national consensus that we're spending less on holiday gifts this year, but lucky for retailers, consumers are still spending something. The amount Americans are allocating to holiday spending varies according to geographic region and age. Can you guess how much people are spending around the country?

Now that we're beginning our

The
recessive economy has made unemployment a new experience for many workers in 2008, and pounding the pavement in search of a new job means interviews are inevitable. Job interviews are the ultimate at putting job hunters on-the-spot, so props to you interviewees for holding your own in front of hiring managers and potential bosses. Whether you rocked them or not, how many job interviews did you go on during 2008?

I'm lucky enough to live in the same city as my parents and in-laws, but some of the moms at Sugar HQ live thousands of miles away from their tots' grandparents. To break the distance barrier, they use the web cams in their computers to
iChat with their parents on a regular basis. They say the online video conversations allow their children to keep up their relationships with their grandparents and satisfy the grandparents' desires to see their loved ones on a more frequent than possible basis.

While they're nothing new to the world of restaurant dining, lately fixed-price menus have become more prevalent. Last month, as the nation's economy reached record lows, online reservation system
OpenTable promoted its
Appetite Stimulus Plan, a three-course, prix fixe promotional offering at restaurants in 13 US cities. I've noticed a number of San Francisco dining spots with set menu bargains, and
New York establishments are also suggesting several courses for a steal.

I just checked in on the
Shiba Inu live puppy cam for the first time in a couple of days, and I can't believe how big those puppies are getting! What oh what will we do when they're all grown up? Please let there be another puppy cam to take its place!

The change in seasons can add charm to certain places, but some people go through Winter counting down to the arrival of Spring. Even the most delicious cup of creamy hot chocolate won't cheer up somebody affected by
seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression that onsets with shorter, darker days and is alleviated by the typically warmer months.
Experts think a lack of sunlight is to blame for SAD, which explains the tendency for those affected by SAD to feel a positive change in their overall mood during Spring and Summer.

The irony of street art meeting my laptop isn't lost on me; I'm charmed, and yet a little perplexed, by this meeting. Dutch artist Parra brings his
Parra Laptop Sleeve ($60) from InCase, and though the design is derived from graffiti, I think the actual motif is pretty pleasant.
There are days when the design might be a little too loud, though, and I'd maybe like it on something smaller (the design is also available as a
Slider Case for the iPhone 3G), but I'm not sure.

We've been throwing around the word recession in connection with the US economy for some time now — everything from
recession-proof jobs to
recession-proof beauty is common vocabulary. However, in a statement released just today, the National Bureau of Economic Research confirmed that the
economy has been in a recession since December 2007.
The last time the economy was in a recession was 2001, after the tech bubble burst.
