Fab Flash: IMG Announces Designers Showing at Fashion Week

Some designers have opted out of Bryant Park this year, but that won't stop it from being the biggest New York Fashion Week destination. IMG has just announced a partial list of designers set to show at the iconic location come February, and it's packed with heavy hitters. Thus far, the list includes Diane von Furstenberg, BCBGMAXAZRIA (left), Carolina Herrera, and Calvin Klein to name a few.

Fab Flash: Vera Wang and Fellow Designers Announce Fashion Week Changes

You know something is awry when Vera Wang pulls out of showing her collection at Bryant Park in February.

“I finally made the decision last night based on many, many things. The intimacy of a smaller show feels much more appropriate for these times. I say that as a business owner, as a designer and as a person,” said Wang. Instead, the designer plans on creating a more personal setting by showing her offerings at her new Mercer street boutique in NYC.

Sources also revealed that Betsey Johnson has also pulled the plug on Fashion Week at Bryant Park. In addition, Cacharel announced that it will not show at Paris Fashion Week. Stay tuned for more Fashion Week updates . . .

Fab Flash: More Time for London Fashion Week

In October it was confirmed that London Fashion Week had been saved. Today, it seems another day might even be added to the fashion showcase as New York Fashion Week will move its start date to the second Thursday of every February.

The future of all the fashion weeks is changing as designers are returning to shows at the tents in order to save money. Also, just today it was announced that Valentino would not be showing menswear during the designated week, instead opting for private commercial appointments.

The change in date for New York Fashion Week will begin in September for Spring 2010 shows. Council of Fashion Designers of America executive director, Steven Kolb, told WWD, “Particularly with the economy, we thought, is there a different way during fashion week that designers can show their collections, that makes it more organized and structured for people who go to shows, and also, is there a way designers can perhaps spend less money?"

The CFDA have made other suggestions including keeping the resort shows closer together, encouraging designers to show in groups at the same venue and advocating presentations over catwalk shows.

Fab Field Day: New York Fashion Week

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to be taken to New York Fashion Week with a group of European fashion bloggers for the launch of the latest Sony VAIO products. The new CS11 VAIO notebook aims to bridge the ever-closing gap between fashion and technology using bold colours and a new, easier to hold shape. Whilst there we visited Central Park, saw Equus on Broadway and checked out the famous Fifth Avenue stores. I also managed to catch the Twinkle by Wenlan show at Bryant Park.

Although I began shopping at the classic department stores like Bergdorf Goodman and Bloomingdale's, I soon traveled downtown to check out the boutiques in Soho. I especially loved Poppy, Opening Ceremony and any one of the six Marc Jacobs shops. I also popped in to Sephora for my girl BellaSugar and stocked up on Kiehl's before heading to Walgreens for Cherry Chapstick! Lastly, I got myself up to speed with some of my favourite US magazines like Nylon, Paper and New York Times Style.

Fashion Week Quickie: A Kruger Souvenir

Hands down, my best celebrity sighting at New York Fashion Week was Fab favorite Diane Kruger. I don't know what it is about her. No, actually, I do. She's demure and ladylike, but also experimental and youthful. This is how I like to describe my own personal style. And, just when you think you've nailed down her look, she wears something totally fresh and unexpected. She only attended the Tommy Hilfiger show — in mad plaid — and I had direct view of her. If you asked me to describe the Spring Hilfiger collection, you'd get a hazy explanation, because my eyes were struggling to stay on her while taking in the sporty, elegant clothes; it's usually the other way around. While Diane was whisked away too soon for me to catch her, I pulled a fast one and took her seat holder as a Fashion Week souvenir. Care to join the Fab fan club?

Fashion Week may be over, but we've still got the runway images to gawk over. Since we can't sport the new gear 'til Spring, I figured I may as well use it as inspiration for interiors. The Ralph Lauren ensemble shown here is a bit costume-y, but I love its balance of rough, sporty safari elements with glamazon sequins, and its palette of army greens and rustic browns. The Momeni Metro Rug shares the palette but looks luxurious with its ombré effect, so I thought I'd use it as a jumping-off point for a room designed around this Ralph Lauren look. Agyness ditches the handbag sometimes — she told me so at New York Fashion Week! It's because when she's on the runway she has so much stuff going on — clothes, makeup, accessories. In her personal life, she's more low maintenance. What about you? Can you do without your lip gloss and BlackBerry once in a while?

New York Fashion Week, Spring '09: Sash Belts

Belts have been a key accessory the past year. It's clear why: a belt defines a waist, creates contrast, and encapsulates the female form. Even though we saw a belt in nearly every scene in the Sex and the City movie, for Spring, belts have loosened up and taken notes from martial arts. Wrapped fabric, cinched scarves, and obi belts stood out among the belt bevy. Designers presented these styles through many different muses. Donna Karan's subtle obi proved you don't have to be a black belt to be bad-ass.

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Hanii Y, Sleepwalker

Amid the Oscars and Ralphs, there is always new blood debuting at New York Fashion Week. I was already familiar with the house of Hanii Y, and was curious what the designer's first official presentation would entail. I also had the chance to meet the designer Hanii Yoon — who is half of the other design house Y & Kei, where she designs with her husband. It's a little confusing, but her vintage-inspired, crisp clothes aren't. They are sharply cut, colorful, and above all, unique. And you have to hear about her inspiration for her "Sleepwalking Park" collection — it's really interesting stuff . . .

This is your first time showing at New York Fashion Week. What made you decide to finally present?

When I studied in San Francisco (at FIDM) it was my dream. Donna Karan inspired me to become a big New York designer.

What is your inspiration for Spring?

Sleepwalking. I experienced the "White Nights" in Copenhagen, when the days and nights are bright — it's always day. When I experienced this it was like a dream and day and night blended together. That whole experience made me feel like I was sleepwalking the whole time. The blurring of colors and images, I mixed bright colors with monochromatic colors, masculine with feminine, hard and soft, the varying points are all put together. These (the white pillars in the pictures) are sort of like the trees. We created a white world out of this white night inspiration. This dream-like park, or forest, started with nature. It's fantastical, but also artificial.
