Everyone is looking for a cure to end the obesity epidemic, and the conclusion of a
new study performed by Loyola University Health System indicates our attempts might be off the mark. They found that diet alone, rather than coupled with physical activity, was key to maintaining a healthy weight.
The study compared women from Chicago, weighing on average 185 pounds, with women from Nigeria, weighing on average 127 pounds.

So far I'm doing really well on my New Year's resolution, which is to try to run every . . .
Dirty Dancing star,
Patrick Swayze, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year. Though he's outlived his early bleak prognosis, Swayze refuses to give up. Patrick realizes his days are running out but hopes he has at least two years left and is hoping that doctors will find a cure in that time frame.

Flu season usually peaks around February; the worst is yet to come. In January, many people start dieting to make weight-loss resolutions come true. Therein lies the tension: cutting calories can make you more susceptible to coming down with the flu.

If you refuse to give up your
outdoors runs because it's cold, or if you love to ski, board, or snowshoe, then you need to take some precautions to protect your skin from the bitter temperatures.
Frostbite happens when your skin and body tissues are exposed to cold temperatures for an extended period of time. Your fingers, toes, nose, and ears are the most susceptible.

We're in the heart of Winter and about half of you have managed
to remain healthy this season. Props to your immune systems for protecting you from getting sick, and hopefully you can keep up the health streak as the height of flu season approaches. Typically,
flu season doesn't peak until February, so there's still time to get your flu shot if you've been putting it off.

Often I feel we deserve medals for dealing with the cramps, crying spells, and other delights that accompany
that time of the month. Some women even have to deal with heavy bleeding that lasts more than 10 days.
To control the bleeding without using birth control pills, women can now opt for a surgical procedure called
endometrial ablation, which takes about 90 seconds. It burns cells in the lining of the uterus, and afterward 75 percent of patients never menstruate again, with the remainder experiencing light spotting once a month.

My favorite candy,
chewing gum, not only fights heartburn, but it looks like it may also help conquer stress. Chomping on a piece of gum, and may I add that the gum should definitely be sugar-free, was found to decrease levels of the
stress hormone cortisol by 17 percent. In recent laboratory tests, chewing gum also increased alertness and improved performance.

At the beginning of the year, it's a great idea to check all the
smoke detectors in your home, and replace batteries as necessary. That's not the only detector you need though. Aside from a fire,
carbon monoxide (CO) is something else to think about.
