The folks over at Real Simple (70 of them, to be exact) recently took part in
New York Cares Day, and volunteered at the P.S. 346 elementary school in Brooklyn. In just five hours, they assembled 37 pieces of new Ikea furniture and applied their design expertise to an uninspired multi-purpose room.

Dear Sugar,
My fiance asked me to marry him almost six months ago while on a trip to Disney World after five years of dating. He hadn't told anyone and we waited to share the good news until after we had returned from our trip. Since we are young (I am 21 and he is 23), both our parents expressed happiness for us but enforced the importance of me finishing school.

Since starting a graduate program away from home, you decided to reach out to as many peers as possible to build your network. In doing so, you quickly became friends with your class partner. Although your friendship is relegated to school, he does talk about his wife from time to time.

I like to hear different perspectives on parenting — sometimes I am enlightened and other times I am left shaking my head. After reading an article by Joanne Rendell titled "
Unschooling — Why my kid won't attend school this fall - or maybe ever", I was puzzled. An author married to a college professor, the two New York City dwelling parents decided not to send their five-year-old son, Benny, to Kindergarten for various reasons.

I may be focused on household
tools during
Home Schooling month, but that doesn't mean I've forgotten my old-school roots. I've rounded up the ultimate in classic school supplies to get you back into study mode this month. You may have already gotten your college diploma, but I'm sure you'll appreciate the retro good looks of my scholarly finds.

Now that Labor Day weekend is over, the back-to-school wave is underway. And even if you’re not headed back to academia, you can’t miss the change in the air as lifestyles shift from Summer to Fall. For some, this time can bring on a wave of
nostalgia, while others shudder at the thought of walking back into a classroom.

At the park, a boy twice my daughter's age called her a "bit**" and threw sand in her face. She's 4. If this type of incident occurs at our local playground while the kids are accompanied by parents and nannies, what happens once they head off to school on their own?

Dear Sugar,
My parents are divorced and I've lived in my mother's house for most of my life. I'm currently a student at a very prestigious college. My mom has never fulfilled her responsibilities as a mother.

As a kid, I would have
given most anything for a four-day school week. More weekend time to play with friends and avoid homework would have been heavenly, though it would have meant missing out on the social interaction that the schoolhouse often provided. If the economy stays on the current track (sigh), youngsters all over may be cheering for joy.

Folks in Needville, Texas are protesting bending the school district's rules to let a five-year-old boy with braids enroll in kindergarten. Keeping with his Native American heritage, Adriel Arocha explains that he has never cut his hair "because it tells me how long I've been here." Despite the family's tradition and beliefs, the school board requires that boys wear their hair no longer than their collar.
