From the 27th November, the BBC will make BBC One and BBC Two available to watch live online as they air. The corporation is adding their two main channels to the ones already available, which include News 24, BBC Three and BBC Four. So will you watch their shows like Strictly Come Dancing online when you can't get to a television? Let me know in the poll, and leave me your thoughts in the comments!Source

How to Share Anything on the Internet in Google Reader

You know I'm a freak about Google Reader, and one of the reasons I love it is the Share function. I have a few buddies with whom I exchange interesting posts — for those unfamiliar with it, you can share posts from the feeds that you subscribe to with people on your shared list on Reader. I love sharing so much that I was shocked when my friend told me I could share anything, from any site, whether or not you're subscribing to that feed (or if they don't offer a feed to subscribe to).

Say you run across a video on YouTube, and want all your buddies to see. From this Notes page, drag the "Note in Reader" bookmark to your browser, and then when you find that amazing kitten-in-a-box video, just click that Note in Reader bookmark, and the sharing box pops up as if you're on your Reader page.

To your friends, it will appear exactly the same as the posts from your feeds do.

I have an election night ritual: I settle in from work into some cozy pants and slippers, get on the couch, and eat an easy dinner in front of the TV. This year, I will be in front of the TV, but I'll be dividing my time between it and my laptop to watch the election results come in.Prior to this, I always waited patiently for my newscasters to update me with the latest info, but now with the Internet's reach, I can know the latest as soon as the talking heads do. Like I said, I plan on getting my election coverage from the tube as well as my computer, but are you planning on watching primarily from your TV or the Internet? Source

Call it the Internets, the Interwebs, the series of tubes; yep, the Internet has gone through many lovable nicknames as the years have gone by, and today we're calling it the Birthday Boy (or girl! or whatever)!

The Internet was "born" on October 29, 1969, when two computers on a college campus connected; information, music, and celebrity sex tape distribution would never be the same again.

Where would we be without it? I wouldn't be here, for one thing. Would we all have boring desk jobs where we waited for the next printed memo to come in and to get thirsty so we could have human contact at the water cooler?

How Much Do Your Online Relationships Matter to You?

As reported in the The New York Times, a new study reveals that men are just as attached to their online communities as they are to their real world relationships. Women, on the other hand, reported having a deeper connection to their real life encounters. The article didn't offer explanation for these varying viewpoints, but I'm sure there are many reasons why men and women are different in this respect.

There is something important about a physical relationship — a lot is said through someone's tone and body language — but I have to assume that even if it seems strange to some, online friendships and communities can be just as significant to a woman as her real world ones. But surely it depends on the woman, so since I know you're all active online, I'll ask you: Do you have any online relationships that you value just as much as those in your real life? Or do the connections you create online always come second?

Texting, Internet and Cell Phones Keep Families in Sync

Today's families are much more likely than any other household types to have cellphones and use the Internet, according to a study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. The phone survey of 2,252 adults, between Dec. of 2007 and Jan. of 2008, also shows that families use those technologies to stay in touch with each other throughout the day. The study also found:

About 89 percent of married (or partnered) parents with children own multiple cellphones.
Sixty-six percent have high-speed broadband Internet connections in their homes (compared with a national average of 52 percent).
Seventy percent of couples in which both partners have cellphones contact each other daily just to say hello, 64 percent contact each other to coordinate schedules, and 42 percent of parents contact their children daily using a cellphone.

Study Shows Internet Activity Can Strengthen the Aging Brain

It may be time for older folks to stop telling us the computer is rotting our brains. A new study on Internet use and the human brain shows Google searches and spending time online may help stimulate and improve the minds of middle-aged and older Americans.

Researchers at UCLA studied 24 healthy volunteers ages 55 to 76. Half were experienced Googlers, and the others had no Internet savvy. They performed Internet searches and book-reading tasks while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging scans, which recorded the brain-circuitry changes they were experiencing.

All of the volunteers showed significant brain activity during the reading portion, which stimulated brain regions that control language, reading, memory and visual abilities. When they tested web use only those who had previous Internet experience registered extensive activity.

Vintage Geek: Fingertip Shopping on the Internet in the '60s

This vintage video of the "Internet" in 1969 plays like a so-sexist-it's-silly scene from Mad Men. When describing the eventual conveniences, they point to online shopping — undertaken by the wife — and then establish that the husband then pays (complete with the man of the house shaking his head at the purchases). Dee-lightful!

Even though I previously got rid of a landline, I let one sneak back into my life when I wanted to upgrade my Internet service, and the best deal in town happens to be bundles. Combining cable with voice and Internet yielded the best deals, and I'm not alone; a survey shows that customers prefer subscribing to bundles offered by phone companies, rather than cable companies. Around here, no phone companies offer bundles like the cable company does, so that's not an option for me, but I think it's interesting that so many people are going for bundles, rather than cherry-picking each service. I do it for the price and supreme convenience, even though I now receive a service (voice) that I don't care that much about. What about you? Do you subscribe to some kind of a bundle of cable, phone, and Internet service?Source

The Worst Commenters on the Internet: Hope I'm Not on There

Sometimes things just hit too close to home — which makes them funny because they're true! I recognized all eight offenders on Cracked's list of the most obnoxious commenters on the Internet.

There are the usual suspects, like the Defender (sometimes also known as "fanboys/girls"), The Ninja, who posts one comment and then mysteriously disappears, and the Macho Man, which is a nicer euphemism for the kind of aggressive guys who freak you out in real life, and can still do so in 2D form.

As a passionate commenter, I thankfully did not recognize myself, but check out the rest of the post for a laugh!
