Dear Poll: Does Age Matter in Hollywood Relationships?

Age gaps between Hollywood couples are nothing new, hello Lance and Ashley, Ashton and Demi, even Brian Austin Green and Megan Fox, but for some reason, it doesn't seem like that big of a deal when you're a celebrity — am I wrong? Perhaps it has something to do with their fast-paced life in the limelight or all the experience they have under their belt, I don't know, but this new couple sure has people talking. Hayden Panettiere, 18, and Milo Ventimiglia, 30 were rumored to be dating, but according to these new pictures, it looks as though their secret is out.

I'm sure you all have your opinions on age differences in relationships, but what I want to know is, do you think it matters as much when you're a celebrity?

I think the main reason it doesn't "matter" as much (or appear to) is that celebrities are often independent financially at a younger age. Hayden, for instance, has probably been supporting her family more than they're supporting her.

Personally, I think it depends on the age. I find 18 and 30 much different than 28 and 40.

And I can't stand Hayden, so she icks me out no matter who she's dating.

Hayden needs to get the hell away from my man and yes, it does matter. At some point they will get to times in their relationship
Where they will want different things. Even different career paths.

I don't think age matters as much as the maturity level of the people in the relationship. My close friend is 23 and her husband is 37. No biggie! They met when she was 19, and she lied and said she was 22 for the first few months.

Seriously, who cares? Wether they are celebrity or not, as long as they are happy together. Maybe they don't belong to the same generation, but it doesn't mean they can't realate to anything.
Everybody make such a big deal because thay are famous but you see couples with the same difference of age everyday. If it works for them, it works for me...

Age matters, period, but some couples can make it work. It depends on interests, beliefs, personalities, maturity, how they were raised, et cetera. I think the reason age is often an issue at all is because different generations fall in different places in the areas above.

i don't think age matters. i think it is a timeline issue. Most often, a 30 year old and an 18 year old are not at the same place in their life. In hollywood, however, people are forced to grow up faster, and don't have the same "life problems" (shall i say,) as normal people. They are both successful and driven, which i don't think is weird at all that they are together. If we were talking about a 40 year old and a 28 year old, it would be a different story...no one would say anything.

i think that 18 and 30 is just kind of gross. i mean, when i was 18 the only 30-year-old i would date would be brad pitt haha. i still think it matters as much, it's just that it's "acceptable" for them to date with such large age gaps because they're famous. does that make sense? if a 30-year-old regular man and an 18-year-old regular girl were to date, their friends & family would never leave them alone about it. but hayden and milo can do it because they're famous.

I'm sure Hayden is more grown up than an average 18 year old, but something doesn't feel quite right about a 30 year old with an 18 year old, in general. If the tabloids were correct, they were together when she was 17. I bet they got off on being illegal.

I am willing to bet that these two will not be together for the rest of their lives.

I don't think it really matters if they're a celebrity, so I chose "other". some people just age differently, and their personality's age is a different from their actual age. okay, that might've been a bit confusing, but I know from experience- I'm 20, and my boyfriend is 28, so we're not that far from their relationship.
who knows if they "got off" on it being illegal, but really, dating an older man comes with so much stress that it has to really be right for it to be worth it. there's the unbridled anger and/or skepticism from just about everyone (as evidenced from the earlier posts). there's jokes about statutory rape, "illegal" perversion and whether they're even mature or not. not to mention the family usually takes a bit more convincing that the guy is normal than a regular boyfriend would. what I'm saying is that when you date a guy with that much age difference, it's because you both really like each other, and you can both relate to each other. and the age just truly doesn't matter.

as long as there is not some wacky age difference like Anna Nicole Smith and her geiser, i think it's fine to date someone much older or younger. This may be a stereotype, but i think it's generally better to be a woman and date an older man than a woman dating a younger man. I just think that women mature a little faster and things even out better when the man is older, but there are always exceptions

I don't really care, but I think that 30 is just a tad too old to be going out with an 18-year-old... maybe when she's 23 or 24, the numbers won't be as important. But at 18 she's just barely left girlhood... it seems a bit wrong to be dating someone so much older...

"Celebrities age at a different pace" ... NO, everybody ages at a different pace. However, having been extremely mature for my age at 18, I do not think it would have been appropriate for me to be dating a 30 year old at the time!! No matter how mature, anyone that young still has a lot of learning to do about his or her inner self as well as the world!!

Why should age matter? To say that a gap of 10 years or so matters purely because of the age difference is to deny that everyone is an individual. People DO mature at different rates. So much for self-determination if it suddenly matters.

I think that an age difference that big does matter, their both at very different stages in their life’s, she’s just becoming an adult and she properly wants to go out and party, while at 30 he could be more into settling down. Even now if it doesn’t matter I doubt that she’s going to be ready for any serious commitments in the next 3 years. Also she's always photographed going out shopping while he's never caught by the papz.

i agree with the others saying it's more about place in life than age. 18 and 30 are just in such different places in their lives, even if they are celebrities, whereas 28 and 40 or even the age difference between catherine zeta-jones and michael douglas aren't bad because they're more into their adult life. i don't care how mature hayden might be, i just think she's too young for him.

I don't think this is a big deal. Yes, she's 18 and he's 30, which is a 12 year difference. So, what if she was 21 and he was 33? They would still have the same 12 year gap, and this forum wouldn't even exsist! If she's comfortable with going out with an older man, and accepts that he's WAY more mature than her; and he accepts that he's going out with a young lady and is comfortable enough to introduce her as HIS lady, then there is no wrong. It's not like they were scammed into this. It's what they want; it's what makes them happy. Hell, if I was 18 and had the ability to score a hottie like Milo, I would take my chances. If people are questioning this, then lets take a look at Katherine Mcphee and that Grandpa she's with. =D
My opinion is based on my relationship, which is a 10 year age gap. So I'm completely fine with this.

I voted other because I don't see the relevance of celebrity status. It's more a maturity issue after a certain point. I don't find these two "gross" necessarily (ok, a little, but I'm just jealous) just extremely strange since I find her an immature party girl and him more mature than his 30 years. But I guess I'm wrong.

When he was a senior in high school, she was in kindergarten. Age has got to matter at some point. So when?

The thing all of you who voted yes need to understand, is that age is really about life experience, and where you are in your life. Most 18 year olds are dealing with frustrating roommates in college and fake ID's, and most 30 year olds are thinking about having kids and buying a house, or some similarly settling-down kind of issue, and figuring out what they are going to do on weekends when they aren't at their dead-end job that they hate.

These two are at basically the same places in their careers. In fact, she's been doing this for longer than he has. So, really, the lives they lead are very similar, so their actual ages don't matter. They seem kind of perfect for each other actually. That's just the way it is in the arts - it's the same thing in sports and anything else where age doesn't necessarily equal life experience.

What does being a celebrity have to do with ANYTHING? If you are mature enough to be on the same level as your partner emotionally, then age should never be a factor. Personally, I can't date anyone less than 5 years older than me.

I agree that the celebrity status has nothing to do with the age difference. Age only matters to the people in the relationship, it's impossible for people to say they don't belong together based on just their ages. After all we know nothing about them as people-she may be incredibly mature while he may be very immature for his age.

I don't think that age matters after both parties are legal of course.

    Love is what it is.

I also don't understand the whole celebrity mature thing; I don't care if you are famous or not, the rules apply to everyone!

I think it totally depends on the celebrity. Personally I think anyone who is technically a teenager dating someone who is technically in their 30s is icky. But some are mature and independent for their age, because they've been in show business for years...others are immature and poorly adjusted. Spears and Lohans, I'm lookin at you!

Yeah it feels "icky" now but I think over time, big age gaps will become the norm and there won't be such an uproar. Three years from now, if they are still together, no one will be making a fuss over the age thing.

To everyone saying that age doesn't matter, I'm with you on a lot of levels. I know happy relationships at 20 years apart.

But, we all feel a little gross hearing about 14 and 26, right? Because that feels wrong. Because we think, oh, she's just a kid, even if she's technically physically mature by then. So then 15 and 27, is that a little better? Maybe.

So is there are line between 17 and 18 because that's the legal line? Truly, what is the huge difference between 17 and 18? What about 16 and 18? Probably not too much for some people, and maybe a lot for others.

Bottom line is when a girl is very young, I do believe age does matter, although I don't know at what age it goes from being creepy to okay.

I'm sorry but there is a huge amount of maturing that is done in your early 20s. Famous or not. So that makes a huge difference between the maturity levels of these two. A 12 year difference isn't that big of a deal when the youngest of the two is in his/her mid-upper 20s. But seriously, this is just wrong and it grosses me out.

I've always thought that what counts is not age (meaning "years"), but maturity.
Like, Hayden might be only 18een, but of course she's not your ordinary 18yrs old. She's been in the show biz since when she was a child, she has definitely grown up faster than other girls.

I'm 26 and my boyfriend is 39. He looks younger and is super-fit and a really cool guy. I know 39 sounds "old" but it's really not. Besides, I would like to think that I am mature for my age. It's just a matter of who you get along with and whether or not you're in the same place at the time when you meet. We've been togehter almost two years and I never even think about our 13 year age difference. it really just doesn't matter. My family is okay with it, his family is okay with it, and we are happy! Smiling
