Sex Myth: Peeing After Sex Prevents Pregnancy

While it's a good idea to visit the powder room after you have sex to prevent a UTI, I'm sorry to burst your bubble but it can't prevent you from becoming pregnant. For a short anatomy lesson here, the hole you pee out of is connected to your urethra and the hole that you have sex with leads to your uterus. As my junior high gym/sex ed teacher told me and my fellow terrified classmates, "They're two separate holes!" Peeing after sex may help to flush out bacteria from your urethra, but it doesn't do anything to flush out semen that has been ejaculated inside you.

Dear's Advice: Definitely pee before and after sex to prevent a UTI, but when it comes to preventing an unplanned pregnancy, use a reliable form of birth control.

what?! Someone ACTUALLY believed that? That's almost like the "If you use tampons you're not a virgin anymore." myth.

Haha, I remember my best friend from college didn't know there were two different holes until I literally had to show her a diagram. She kept complaining about taking her tampon out to pee until I finally told her she was crazy and didn't need to.

important safety tip: still pee after sex to rid yourself of any bacteria that made its way into your urinary tract to prevent those painful bladder infections (UTI's)

"While it's a good idea to visit the powder room after you have sex to prevent a UTI, I'm sorry to burst your bubble but it can't prevent you from becoming pregnant."

Wow... I feel so... lied to. By my family, my health teacher, society at large!

I need a new birth control technique pronto. Anyone have any suggestions?!

Non-sarcastic aside: The statement quoted above is funny in and of itself, since merely "visiting the powder room" could mean re-applying your makeup. Which, I've heard, doesn't do much for UTIs either.

LOL @ this and at popgoestheworld... and here I thought reapplying my lipgloss asap was more effective than any two forms of birth control together... how misguided I have been!

But really... who thinks this shiz?

Good to know. At least I know my back-up method of always being on top is fool-proof. It's a simple rule of gravity.

This is absurd! I don't know anyone who has believed that to be true.

Although, like you mentioned, it's important to pee after sex to prevent a UTI. My sister is a nurse and she told me that years ago.

of course they're different holes, but what about gravity? Keeping in more should add to the chance of becoming pregnant? Or is the keep your pelvis up after sex to increase your chances a myth too?... dear???
