Cat Guys; The New Trend

I just came across an interesting article in the New York Times that may be debunking the common assumption that dog is a man's best friend. It seems that more heterosexual men are coming out of the "cat closet," opting for a fluffy, cuddly cat instead of a high maintenance rowdy dog. Sandra DeFeo, an executive director at the Humane Society of New York said that there's been an increase in single men adopting cats and Carole Wilbourn, a cat therapist, said that the number of her straight male clients has risen 25 percent over the past five years.

As we all know, owning a cat comes with a plethora of negative connotations, especially for women, but I don't buy it — an animal lover is an animal lover! And doesn't owning a feline say something about his confidence? I certainly think it does. What do you think? Are you turned off by men that own cats? Are you turned on because you're a cat lover too? Or does it make no difference to you whatsoever?

I love cats, so I wouldn't care if a guy owned one, too. At least it would mean that he's not allergic to cats, something that my boyfriend struggles with (although he seems to have built up a tolerance to my cat after 2 1/2 years).

"owning a cat comes with a plethora of negative connotations"
Really? I've owned cats my whole life and never thought of them as ever having a negative connotation... I don't see why it would be weird dating a guy who has a cat... in fact my ex and I adopted a cat together (which still lives at his house) and I never thought of that as being weird or odd in any way... am I missing something here?
Ive always had dogs and cats around since I was little and have never been made aware of the negative connotations involved in owning cats...lol

Eh. I don't think I'd care either way. I hate animal hair on my clothes though. Sticking out tongue

Trying to put aside that I love cats and have two -- it makes no difference whether a man has a cat or a dog. My husband had a dog when I met him and now the dog lives with us and the two cats. I wouldn't have seen him as wimpy or whatever if he had a cat instead.

"As we all know, owning a cat comes with a plethora of negative connotations, especially for women..."

    Huh?

I'll give you that an older woman with an unworn wedding dress in her closet, and 20 cats has negative connotations.

I grew up with a couple cats as pets and now I have a couple of my own that I adopted with my boyfriend.

    I'm psycho, b*tches. Watch out!

I prefer cats to dogs, but I don't have the animosity towards dogs that some people have expressed towards cats here. I find that bizarre.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. A you say, an animal lover is an animal lover. Well, unless it's a snake or a spider. Smiling

yeah, I don't get that either, lawchick. I can understand not being a cat person, but why are cats so hated? And why is it creepy for a guy to own one? Cats & dogs are the two most common pets. It's not like the guy owns a boa constrictor--now that would creep me out.

My boyfriend likes to make fun of my cat, but deep down I think he likes him. There is nothing cuter than coming home and seeing my boyfriend & cat taking an afternoon nap together.

My boyfriend is a cat guy, and I'm a dog girl, but neither of us have any problem with the other animal, which works out well Smiling

My husband started out a cat guy. He had two cats growing up and looooved them. Then, when we moved in together, we ended up with two cats too! Once we moved into our house, we got a dog a short time later. Now, we're happy cat and dog owners.

PS: I've never really been a cat or dog person - I love all animals!

My husband's family had cats when he was little so when we wanted a low-maintenance pet, a cat was the obvious choice (I was always a dog person before that). Now I'm a total convert! And I love how sweet my husband is with our cats, makes me look forward to how great he'll be with babies!

My first serious bf had two huge cats- they were more like dogs- I never thought much of it.

I adopted two cats from the same litter with my ex and kept them both when we split. My husband always said he was a dog person, but he LOVES my cats- he still wants a dog, but we arent going to get one until we have a house with a yard. I just prefer cats, they are easier to take care of- we can go away for a weekend and they are fine.

My boyfriend has a cat and it's working out. I look forward to seeing him too (the cat oh and my boyfriend). The only drawback is the constant hair all over EVERYTHING: the bed, my Macbook Pro, the clothes....

To me, a guy can't be all bad if he has a cat. It's so sweet when a guy has one. So, a guy having a cat can only be a good thing.

I don't like cats, and my boyfriend is a cat person. I don't like it when we go over to his parents and having their cat around (I swear it's plotting something) but it is kindof sweet to see him interacting with the cat--an animal lover IS an animal lover.

We're going to get a dog in the next couple years, though, because I dislike cats but he's just neutral toward dogs.

I'm not an animal lover, I heat taking care of them. And I'm very afraid of cats so is kind of a minus but if the guy is great I don't know what I would do.

"cat guy" totally sounds like a guy in a turtle neck sweater, glasses, who uses tons of kleenex and doesn't go out much, just stays home with kitty. i don't think having a pet cat makes a man a "cat guy", anymore than a woman having a cat makes her a "cat lady".

I'm a cat lover and my b/f is a dog lover (b/c he's always had dogs) but he loves my cat. Baby is 12 and she's my little honey bunny...she comes when I call, talks to me, follows me around, greets me at the door, sleeps with me. I couldn't ask for a better pet!

My best guy friend has a cat and they're adorable together. I'm definitely a dog person though, since I'm highly allergic to cats. Sometimes I find it hard to be at his apartment for longer than an hour because I'll start to sneeze. I definitely prefer a guy to be a dog person, like me.

I take offense at the whole "cat lady" phrase, and I'm all for single men who have feline company. What's not to love about cats? I love dogs too, but cats are just as cuddly and they are not as high-maintenance.

Have been a life long "Dog Person" but since I got my kitty, Bosie, I'm a complete convert. I used to think I would only dig "Dog Dudes" now I'm open to "Cat Guys" as well... as everyone on here has said, an animal lover is an animal lover.

speaking as an ex "no cat" person, I just think the misconception is that cats are aloof, prissy/sissy, loners that don't appreciate humans as much as dogs do. people think cats are "boring" and compared to dogs they don't wear their heart on their sleeves as obviously as dogs do.

My cat wears her heart on her sleeve more so than my dog. I have a miniature long-haired dachshund who could really care less about me except for when I come home. Then she's on her own. She doesn't come when I call or sleep with me or anything. She's more of a cat than my cat. My cat is like a puppy!
