A Do or a Don't: Partying With Co-Workers

I love attending work parties. It's always fun to blow off steam with co-workers and see what they're like when they let their hair down. But I always watch myself as drinking too much in the presence of superiors could lead to quite an uncomfortable situation! Luckily, I haven't had to learn the hard way, but I've witnessed people that have and their embarrassment was overwhelming. Of course, no one aims to be a sloppy drunk, but as we all know, accidents happen. So what do you think about partying with your co-workers? Is it a do or a don't?

It depends on what kind of industry you are in I suppose. For me, do!

I work for a wine company, we do a yearly trip to somewhere fun (last year, mexico. Year before that, Vegas) and since we're in wine there is constantly an open bar going on... majority of my bosses are trashed before I even finish my second glass of wine.

In my business, its veeeery common to party with the higher ups. We went to Whistler in August just for a fun weekend getaway (went ziplining, weee!) and after our yummy steak dinner we all went clubbing together. Tons of fun!

I'd just be more careful of my alcohol intake than I would around friends.

depends on your organization. At my last workplace, I'd say not at all. But at my current position, it wouldn't be frowned upon. That is, as long as you keep yourself out of trouble and don't do anything you wouldn't want to end up on someone's myspace.

It depends completely on where you work. More casual jobs or closer-knit coworkers would be much easier to go out with than if you were in a conservative profession. I agree with Jude C in either case though - I'd watch my intake more than I would if I were out with friends.

It depends where you work and WHO you work with. I have a few coworkers that are close friends (in age and in relationship); I'd trust them with my drunken-ness. Of course, I have some restraint when I drink too.

I wouldn't go partying with my boss though. A little too odd for my tastes.

when i worked in politics it was almost part of the job, lol. but other industries, i don't know. i would think at popsugar it would be fine. maybe in careers/jobs where you aren't competing for promotion but working TOWARD something together.

MAJOR DON'T!! I've learned from experience. It's like partying w/ your next door neighbors, you think it's innocent fun. The next day, the whole neighborhood knows of your craziness. Keep business business, and party w/ your friends outside of work.

I would never party with anyone from my workplace. It would not be professional in any context to me. It is important to me to keep (most) of my home life separate from my work life. I don't mind sharing a few innocuous details about my personal life -- for example, everyone in my office knows about my fiance and I, when our wedding date is, that we have a dog, etc. But the person I am when I have a lot of alcohol in my system is NOT who I want my boss to see at all!

My work is definitely my second family. Most of us have hung out after work together, I've had parties at my house, and they have all come.... and our actual holiday parties are pretty much INSANITY. Everyone gets trashed, (including the boss) and there are a few crazy "You tube videos" that have been made. But I think it brings us all closer. I definitely work in a casual environment. Lol.

I think it's great IF you can exhibit self control. We def had a happy hour at then of a project, and 2 people got so drunk that one actually thew up on the table, and the guy started trying to kiss every girl present EXCEPT me, but that was ok, i did have to hold his hand to get him to walk to the car with us and then he became belligerent and took a pee in front of me and my manager in the parking garage.

You def don't want to be those guys hahaha. But I think it causes bonding that's beneficial.

where i am now, somewhere where i want to build my career, i say no
at my previous job, where i had tons of friends in the office, we were drunk all the time, but now i prefer to keep my personal life personal to me

i have to remember to watch because i am going on a business trip to Italy and can't get too drunk because i would never want to regret something in the morning

I do not "party" with my co workers. I am in a supervisor position, and we work with children.
I just don't want to see my employees drunk and partying, and then have to see them on the job!
Also, another branch manager ran into trouble with this and was fired, so better safe than sorry.
We did have a company wide party in May, and that was okay.

I've partied with lots of coworkers before and it was always fun! As long as your boss isn't there, I don't see how it's a bad thing.

My office has a very close relationship. For my 21st birthday, my co-workers and boss took me downtown to the clubs and made sure I was a sloppy drunk.

at my last work we had an office christmas party and i got pretty damn drunk. at the time, i was the youngest worker there and everyone thought i was so cute and innocent. the night is a bit of a blur, but i don't think i did too much embarrassing stuff...afterwards people from work kept telling me how funny i was drunk and that even though i was really drunk i was just good to hang out with and they liked seeing the side of me they didn't think i had...and i liked showing it to them, i hate people assuming i'm sweet and innocent.
so far in my new job i haven't gone to any work functions. the girls invite each other out occasionally for birthdays and farewell drinks, so i'm hoping to be invited to one of those events sometime soon, as i'm bonding a lot more and growing closer with them i've noticed. last year i didn't attend the christmas party because i hadn't been working there for long and felt like i'd feel awkward, but i will attend this year!
i think its a do, but control yourself, even if you do get drunk!

It depends. I have a career now, not just a job. It is a BIG no to party with co-workers. If I was still in college waiting tables with a bunch of other college kids then it wouldn't be a problem.

My husband is in upper management at his job. He wouldn't even consider hanging out with a co-worker. It gives people the wrong impression and when back at work gives people the notion that they can walk all over you or get special favors, because after all....you are drinking buddies.

I have gone out drinking with my coworkers. It's fun as long as no one gets too out of control.

    I dont do this anymore.

A few years ago I started at a new job and went to the xmas party, which I had one glass of champagne and stayed a little while and left.

The next year I had settled in and got VERY drunk on the party boat, drinking out of champagne bottles and generally embarassing myself. I ended up being sick in the loos for a few hours and somehow got home.

Monday morning I had voicemail messages of me screaming at people (just random useless stuff) and how funny they found me. Most embarrassing thing EVER.

Nowadays we go for dinner or a few drinks and be done with it. BUT I have a career now, and work with some very influential people, so would never risk it on a few drinks.

In my career, not going to the company parties is a bad thing--it's how you network with others in the company to stay chargeable so, it is important to go and network. the drinking part is up to you. But, just to say, at the Christmas Party...the partners of our firm rent out the penthouse, stock it with beer, liqour and music, and allow those of us who want to leave the party when the hotel says and go to the penthouse to cintue partying down...work hard, play hard!

Big time HUGE and major don't! Things that happen at a gathering can and will be used against you. It's different if it's a company hosted event, but after hours hanging is a big time no-no. My company actually has a written policy about it in our handbook.

NO WAY! I always keep work and personal life separate.
Your co-workers should not see you in a non-professional setting. End of.
