Do Gentlemen Really Prefer Blondes?

I have a friend who recently went from naturally brunette to shockingly blond, all because she was having a tough time in the dating department. She heard guys prefer blondes and thought changing her hair color may help change her luck. Have you heard that too? I definitely have, and although I don't necessarily agree with my friend's impulsive approach to finding a boyfriend, the idea does intrigue me, as it did author Jena Pincott. She set out to answer this, and other juicy questions regarding men in her book entitled, Do Gentlemen Really Prefer Blondes? She began doing research to help answer questions in her own love life and compiled all her scientific research about sex, men, and love in this book to share with other puzzled women.

Seriously though, I know you're dying to know if men really would rather be with a blonde. To hear what Jena had to say, read more.

It turns out women with blond hair are rare in most cultures, and they tend to stand out against their dark-haired sisters. It's the reason men seek them out more, and why they receive more sexual attention. Light-colored hair is also a symbol of youth and fun, so naturally guys go for that. Pretty interesting, huh? Jena Pincott has meticulously studied the science of sexuality, dating, and attraction, so if you're interested in hearing more, check out this book. She covers topics such as how to tell if a guy is daddy material just by looking at his face, how a man's smell can affect your desire for him, and how a guy's hair can give you insight into his health. Fascinating questions answered to help shed a little more light on the mystery of men.

    sonya, me too!

I personally think most people look best with their natural color. I think we match on purpose you know?

Anyway, blonde hair might increase attention, but it ain't going to keep a man around, so why bother? Seems a little desperate.

It mainly applies to Caucasian men, and I do agree with zcoral; (white) men prefer blondes for lighter relationships (maybe because of the (unfair and inaccurate) perception that blondes are ditzier, easier etc.)
I'm not sure about men from other races though. Most non-white guys I know have said they find blonde nothing special and pay more attention to facial features (and other assets Sticking out tongue ). I also think non-white men are more interested in light skin color than in light hair.

I have a friend from college that dyed her natural blond hair, light brown. It looks great on her. She looks younger and the color warms her up. She says she'll never go back to blond.

Would you believe a guy cheated on me with a 'boobie' blond and after I pushed him out the door with my foot...he convinced her to dye her hair my hair color.

As an intelligent, reddish-brown haired woman...I'd say obviously they do. But not for long unless they are the kind of guy brunettes and red heads don't want anyway.

I'd never dye my hair blond. For any reason. I don't want unhealthy hair for one...it's very thick. And I'd truly look like Casper in the winter. Not to mention, I don't want to be grouped in that stereotype cause I already have big boobs.. No thanks. I'll take the guys that love red heads because as soon as the gray sets in...I'm going copper!! Laughing out loud

I think it matters on the girl's personality more. There can be a beautiful woman who isn't that smart and a pretty woman who has an opinion and is very smart, witty, charming. A man is going to be drawn to the beautiful woman, obviously, but for a short instant. But in the long run he's going to prefer the woman who has something going on other then her looks.

Im Italian American with dark features so going blonde is definetly NOT an option for me... even with highlights my hair gets really brassy and orange, which Im sure if they did a study you would find men definetly dont prefer the hair color "insane" to brunette lol

but I agree with Pop... I feel like everyone looks good with their natural color... and men who only want to date blondes because their blonde are idiots... I dont know one self-respecting blondie who would want to date someone who only likes them for their golden locks

I find the comment about men dating blondes and marrying brunettes kind of insulting to be honest. Im a natural blonde and I've only ever been in a handful of serious committed relationships - never a serial dater or a one night stand.
Men have their preferences as do women... hair colour doesn't contribute to intelligence or compatibility. JMHO
As a side note, my hair is a dramatic mix of black and blonde at the moment, and I've never gotten more attention... best of both worlds? haha...who knows... Its definitely fun though!

I'm a natural blonde too. I don't recall ever having a guy date me for my hair color and I think the stereotypes applied to blondes are disgusting. Maybe the real airheads are the girls who dye their hair blonde and not the natural blondes...all that hair-dye has to get to you after a while.

DearSugar I'm dying to know what your friend's experience was after she went blonde!!

My husband has only been with blondes. It actually kind of bothers me (I don't want to feel like one in a long line) - although I found out last night that he does not consider me blonde (as I do myself) but a burnette. So....I don't know what that means.

Sometimes when I'm feeling petulent I am tempted to cut off all my hair and dye it dark brown to see how it would affect his reactions to me.

So sad that I'm still that immature....

i definitely get more attention when i'm blonder. it's stranger attention though, not from my husband. i remember after coloring my hair darker (horrible) i was at the movies and no one looked twice at me. i was so relieved, because it looked awful, but also realized the blond hair was an attention getter.

"Who doesn't love a hot blondie?"

According to the anecdotal evidence offered by the ladies here, evidently *a lot* of men. Sticking out tongue

Mr. Mouse prefers brunettes. He has no particular hankering for blondes.

But, in response to your comment, what guy doesn't appreciate a "hot" (or beautiful, attractive, sultry) chick (regardless of hair color)? Most men I know do not discriminate.

It seems that the darker haired ladies on this board have received as much attention as their lighter haired counterparts.

yea, I'm going to say that it pretty much has NOTHING to do with haircolor, but moreso how the girl carries herself that attracts a guy for whatever reason. I've dyed my hair many many colors, and I've received the same attention every time.

I know Nonny, I read the comments, that's why I made mine. Hair color, race, height, weight, etc. really does not matter. And none are for marriage while others are just for dating. It all depends on chemistry and where you are at in your life.

" Who doesn't love a hot blonde?" Are you kidding?

What I do know for sure is that my husband definitely does not.He says for him, it has more to do with what's on the inside and that hair color has absolutely no bearing on what he prefers.

Really? Someone could love me for something other than my blondeness? Say it ain't so! Oh, it must be the boobs then. Haircolor gets my foot in the door. The boobs reserve my place.

This isn't meant to insult anyone just to share my experience but this topic has come up with my husband and his friends while they are playing pool at the house and the unanimous opinion between the 6 of them is, brunettes and redheads are quality, blonds are cheap, and blue/pink/purple/whatever else was a fun night out. That has also been the opinion of every man i have ever talked to about it.

Also for the woman saying hair color has nothing to do with it, the "it depends on whats inside" thing is just what men tell you cause they have been trained to sound sensitive, everything from your eye and hair color to the clothes you wear factors into the initial decision for a man to talk to you and what he expects from you, all tho you can still change his mind down the road.

that's really funny - but i have to say that i have a great time attracting guys and i've rarely had a problem, so it could be true, but who knows for sure. it's kind of like the 'blondes have more fun' comment. if you say it, then people will believe you.

i have found that my hair color (which has varied over the years from blonde to red to dark brown)matters less than the confidence i have in how i look.

the happier/more confident i am in my physical appearance is directly correlated to the amount of guys i attract.

I think it's just a initial attraction because it out of the norm and catches the eye. Until people started dying their hair is was rare and unusual as blond hair and non-brown colored eyes started as a genetic defect. Throughout history they were outcast. And now it's seen as a treasure or precious gem of sorts. I see that as a triumph really. It's overcoming adversity. Completely flipping the script. I just don't enjoy when it's used to discriminate.
And pretty woman can be smart also. But you'll break your neck trying to prove it.

I've read the book and the reason men are attracted to blondes and women with long hair is because it is easier to tell age and health.. two factors for determining fertility in the past. I think men are evolving now due to all the different things women do to change appearance.

I might browse through this book, though the questions mentioned in the post are ones I already know the answer to. Just by my personal observations, I've noticed more guys marry brunettes. But when blonde girls walk down the street, more men look at them or do a double take than with brunettes. It may make someone look at you initially, and guys may have a 'type', but I don't think it matters.

Well I have blonde hair. I do get more attention. It sucks, men put me in the blonde-list and assume all kinds of things of me (not all men thank god). And I hate when men (sorry to say this but especially turkish men or that type) try to make eye contact or whistle when I'm for example, just waiting for bus to come or even waiting for green light.. Like I'm wh*re or something. I dress nicely so that can't be the wh*re sign Laughing out loud

For me, I've tried brown hair, red hair, jennifer aniston hair. Does not fit me. I'm so nordic that brown hair looks gothic on me.

I sound like a man hater. I'm not BTW Laughing out loud Good people out there, not all idiots.
