Gonorrhea of the Throat?

I don't know how many women I've talked to that say they'll engage in oral sex with a guy no problem, but if they're going to have sex, they make him get tested first. Um, hello?! For all those ladies out there with that mindset, I have four words for you — Gonorrhea of the Throat. Remember that oral sex still allows secretions to be passed from one partner to another, and since some people with STIs such as gonorrhea don't show symptoms until the condition has progressed, they can unknowingly pass it on. Now can you see why I'm so pushy about advising that you and your partner get tested before any intimacy occurs?

I know gonorrhea of the throat sounds utterly painful, but symptoms only include a sore throat, and some people experience no symptoms at all, although people with this condition often have signs of regular gonorrhea as well. To diagnosis this STI, a doctor will take samples of secretions from the infected areas and luckily, all types of gonorrhea can be treated with a healthy dose of antibiotics.

Seriously ladies, if this doesn't make you request that a new partner get tested, I don't know what will. Any type of intimacy where you have the possibility of being exposed to another person's blood, semen, vaginal secretions, or breast milk should only occur if you know your partner is STI free.

Dear's Advice: If getting tested before oral sex isn't happening, you can still protect yourself by having the man wear a condom, or a woman place a dental dam over her lady business. I know that doesn't sound very sexy, but it's better than finding out you have gonorrhea of the throat!

Umm so I haven't been sexually active in over a month but it's been a few months since I've been tested and this article has helped me decide to schedule a little check up. Peace of mind can't buy that.

Gonorrhea of the throat wow this sounds disgusting. I know a lot of people who have or have had a one night stand. It's scary when I read this because of the fact that it said that symptoms are not shown until later on. EWWW

Yeahhh... I really don't understand the idea of going down on a guy as "no big deal".... or being sexually intimate in any way being no big deal... but I'm probably one of the more conservative among my friends when it comes to who/when I sleep someone.

"should only occur if you know your partner is STI free"
Sounds a little judgmental... Does that mean that those of us with incurable STI's like HSV and HPV don't deserve a sex life?

am i the only person who thinks the concept of wearing a condom or dental dam (!?!) is absolutely crazy for oral? like it's technically "good" but as if anyone actually does that

I don't think it was meant to come across as judgmental. I think it is saying more should only occur when you know what you are getting into. Then you can make a decision for yourself. I dated a girl who had an STI and she was upfront with me and we spoke with a doctor and I decided to go forth. We dated a few months before breaking up. It has been almost 4 years and I have no signs. I think as long as people are upfront and safe about it then all is good. I can't imagine life without a healthy sex life and I'm not really trying hard to think of that kind of life because it sounds terrible. So long statements short, you deserve a healthy sex life em

OK about the taste of latex thing...has anyone wondered why they have flavored condoms? That flavor will eventually all go away and then what?!

ick.....but in all honesty, a dental dam or a condom? if you're gonna wear those, then whats the point of even bothering, IMO.

I know I'm the minority, but I'm wayyy pickier with what goes in my FACE than the rest of my body. I'll have (protected) sex long before I'll give head. And I make him wash it, with soap, before I do anything. I dunno, I just really have to care about a person to do it and the majority finds me weird for that, lol.

And I agree, if you're gonna wear a condom or dental dam for oral - What's the point??

Ladies, beware, this is true!! My older sister is a health educator and professor at a very prestigious university. One time I was complaining of this wicked sore throat that would not go away and she was a bit slow to respond, and I was confused. Finally she just said, "I'm just saying, at the clinic, whenever someone has a wicked sore throat that won't go away and it's not strep for sure, a lot of times it's gonnorhea of the throat."

I panicked!! I didn't even know you could get some thing like that! I was terrified because I had just found out my ex had been cheating on me and I didn't use protection for oral sex because I was unaware that I might need it. Needless to say I got myself tested for peace of mind and thankfully didn't have anything. But it is common and rampant especially at universities.

Pretty much any woman I know only make their guys wear condoms so they are protected from getting pregnant. I've had friends blow many random guys without protection. Women seem defensive, but the reality is that some promiscuous women don't often consider getting an STI in their mouth.

There's no reason to be close-minded about protection for oral sex. If a girl picks up a stranger, it's best to use protection. Also, a guy with an STI should also be allowed to enjoy some oral, which means a girl should protect herself.

Yeesh! So many anti-condom comments! I NEVER use a condom with my boyfriend, and I definitely consider that one of the benefits of a monogamous, long-term relationship, however, if I were having more casual sex, I would use a condom! Sure, the sex wouldn't be as fun, but getting an STI is a lot less fun than decreased sensation...

At least gonorehea of the throat is curable with medication, unlike herpes or HPV of the throat/mouth/gums!
