A little while back, I told you about IUCs, which are a kind of long-term birth control that are becoming really popular since many women don't want to have to remember to take their pill every day or interrupt lovemaking to slip on a condom. IUCs allow for spontaneous intimacy and are over 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy. There's a lot more to know, so let's see what you remember!

100%. I have a Mirena IUD so I know a little something from my research and of course from DearSugar.

Hmm, this is sparking my attention. You ladies who have them, that do you think? You like it? Did it hurt to get inserted?

beaner - I have a Mirena and I love it! It does hurt to get inserted, particularly if you've never had children like me, but its not unbearable. I went back to work after my insertion. For me it just felt like the worst cramps I've ever had for about 10 minutes and then I was fine, followed by some light cramping off and on for about a month. Its totally worth it!

I had Mirena inserted and it was one of the most painful experiences in my life. Followed by severe cramping and some bleeding.

6 months later I decide I want it out. Go to the dr for what should be a 5 minute procedure.

After about 3 hours of painful attempts to remove it, some X rays and CT scans it was determined that my Mirena was floating loosely in my pelvis.

I needed to have an expensive surgery where filled my abdomen full of co2 and they went in through my belly button and pelvis to remove it.

The doctor thought that the only way this could happen is during insertion, when she accidentally tunneled the IUC through my uterine wall. Ouch.

Moral of the story. Don't get an IUC.
