I've given you a lot of information about genital herpes and even though people seem to be aware of how easy this STI is to contract, herpes is still effecting sexually active men and women every day. According to a new study released yesterday, the number of infected New Yorkers is up. What do you think the new statistic is? How many people have genital herpes in NYC?

I am pretty sure it is actually higher than that with the amount of promiscuity occurring!

In all seriousness, it is a scary statistic. I wonder what it is in L.A./Hollywood? It's gotta be close!

I am really not that surprised. After living there I watched a lot of friends, take a lot of chances with their sexual health and have multiple partners.

This is my hometown and while I'm surprised we have the highest rate in the country, I'm not surprised at the actual number of 1 in 4. A lot of crazy, unprotected screwing around goes on.

yeah....genital herpes is very common... bad bad bad..even if you are protected it can be spread... its skin to skin contact.. and you touch areas that the condom can't cover

Um...You say that "clearly people are not practicing safe sex." This is not necessarily the case at all. The comment at the end to everyone to make sure that you practice safe sex is misleading. Many people contact herpes even though they use condoms. The person that gives it to them is shedding the virus on parts of their skin not covered by a condom. Of course safe(R) sex is always better, and it is better to always use condoms, but doing so does not guarantee that you will not contract herpes. Probably the reason that the rates are increasing is because people are having increased #'s of sexual partners, thereby increasing the chance of infection. Also, individuals may be asymptomatic, and unaware that they have it, or they may know that they have it and not inform their partners or take preventative measures such as daily suppressive therapy. You might want to clarify this info for people, as many are not aware of this. Thank you.

Im from NYC and Im not surprised. PPL are VERY casual about sex. They dont get tested (because they look clean) and sleep around (because you know....everyone does it).

Casual sex with people you barely know is insane. Both person needs to get tested a few times each year. Symptoms may be dormant in your body or your partners - so you never know.

(condoms dont protect you from herpes)

Sex is such a huge responsibility.
