A Do or a Don't: Garter Belts

The garter-belt toss is a particular wedding tradition that though still in use, hasn’t stood the test of time quite like the bouquet toss and the white dress. I’ve never seen a garter-belt toss that didn’t somehow feel awkward or forced, but I imagine if it's done tastefully, it can be cute. I'm a traditional girl, but still, there’s something weird about watching the bride lift her skirt in front of her closest family and friends! But what do you think? Are garter belts classic or just plain crass?

I'm not a fan of the bouquet/garter toss and won't have one at my wedding. But I don't have a problem with it if someone else wants to, and I'll even participate (reluctantly) if my friends force me onto the dance floor.

Although I always stand at the back and never try to catch.

I didn't do this or the bouquettoss at my wedding and no one cared. I never thought the garter thing was even a little bit classya ndhaving my new husband climb underneath my dress in front of a room full of our closet friends and family just never seemed like a good idea

I like actual garter belts/suspenders, but this kind of garter has always seemed so tacky to me.

I didn't want (or have) the garter belt thing (or bouquet toss) -- partially because my dress was pretty fitted (not a poufy skirt, very straight) and you really can't have this fluffy thing under a fitted dress. partially because that stuff wouldn't have fit in with our reception, which was a classy cocktail party type thing.

    To each her own, though!

My mom actually suggested I get one that was my college colors - I am an avid fan of my team, but I was horrified at the idea of someone lifting up my dress and then there being a tacky garter. This is one tradition that I don't care for and have no intention of doing.

I think the garter toss is dumb. And I've been forced out for the bouquet toss but avoid it if it comes close to me.

I like garter belts. I didn't want to throw one. I didn't throw a bouquet either, though.

The DJ (with the support of the groomsmen) at my best friend's wedding made her groom remove the garter with his teeth... While blindfolded. Hilarious and mortifying all that the same time!

Ew, I think this is tacky. I didn't do it at my wedding...couldn't bear the thought of, like DearSugar said, lifting my skirt in front of my family & friends, and having my husband dive in!

I think it's funny when it's other people and depending on the couple/crowd. But it's not my style.

Not my style, either. I never go for anything borderline tacky or inappropriate. My wedding reception is going to be sooooooooo boring!

I may do this, but I may turn away so no one sees my fiance go up my dress! Hah. Or maybe take it off ahead of time and have it ready, lol.

    I like that much better.

Actual old-fashioned sexy garter belt holding up your seam-up-the-back stockings on your wedding night = hotness

Garter toss at the reception = tacky

not to nitpick, but a garter belt is entirely different than a garter! And now that I've typed it so many times, the word doesn't even make sense anymore

I think it's a really fun wedding tradition...I've only been to two weddings where they didn't do it and all the guests kept asking when/if they were going to.

My mom made 2 garters for me, one to keep and one to toss, I made sure it was down close to my knee when we did the toss and my husband didnt stick his head up my dress to get it, we saw that at another wedding and we both agreed it was tacky looking. I also had a break apart bouquet to toss so that it wasnt one girl having everyone be all "ooooo, youre next!" everyone thought it was great.

Small rant... I hate when, if the couple chooses to do a bouquet toss, everyone backs away and tries not to catch it. It's not like it's a death sentence. It's a lighthearted game. You don't HAVE to get married next, so stop making such a big deal out of and catch the damn thing. I just think that reaction brings a negative energy to something that should be fun for the bride and groom.

It wasn't my idea of a good time but my relatives really wanted it so we did it of course. It's fun but could definitely come off as tacky.

I sort of think it's weird because I even blush when I think about my parents seeing my boyfriend and me holding hands at the wedding. HAHA. Sooo, I don't know if I would be particularly crushed if everyone agreed I should forgo the tradition.

I've gotta say I agree with BellaSugar and UFshutterbabe, garter belts as real lingerie, super sexy...garters like this, not so much.

I think I'm just a snob, but there are so many wedding traditions that are so inexplicable to me. I've got to go with the elegant cocktail party reception. I probably won't even wear the traditional wedding dress, etc, so...but yeah, no garter, no bouquet, etc.

I have no desire to do the garter toss but the bouquet toss I always thought was cute... although I'd get a second, much smaller bouquet for tossing. But now after reading everyone's comments I'm feeling maybe it's kind of lame! Conflicted!!
