A Good Idea or a Bad Idea: Mixing Friends

Mixing friends can sometimes be a lot of fun, but other times it can turn out disastrous. When you're the only common thread amongst different groups, one would think that because they like you, they'd like each other too, but that isn't always the case. Of course we want everyone to get along, but it my experience, sometimes it's just better to keep specific friends separate. Though I've matched some pretty good friendships, I've also failed miserably, which in turn created nothing but drama for myself. So ladies, in your experience, do you think mixing friends is a good idea or a bad idea?

I don't think it's always good or always bad, but within reason, it is worth a try. A lot of friendships are started by meeting through mutual friends. But this can cause issues when the new friends gang up on and/or ignore their introducer. You have to be prepared for the possibility that your friends could end up liking each other better than you!

I like mixing friends. I have never had one set of friends become close to another but i'm a fan of "the more the merrier".

I think it's always worth trying. Recently one of my close friends kind of dropped off the face of the planet for a while because she was hanging out with a new set of friends and was afraid my group wouldn't like them. We finally met and got along pretty well!

I enjoy mixing friends, but my best friend like can't interact with a new group of people!! It's kind of annoying when I try to 'make the rounds' and she won't talk to anyone but me

i have friends from a million different groups, and i dont mind mixing, but it really depends on the person

you have to know your friends, because some people are just grumpy or b*tchy and they won't get along with new people

i've had success, when it's my best friends who i know will always get along and play well with others, but my college friends have tried to mix me in with their friends from highschool and i hated it. we don't get along - but they should have known that to begin with - i don't deal well with spoiled brats, and she's a spoiled brat.

you have to know your audience, people!

oh yah, and when the mixing is at a bar, party, or dinner, that's one thing, but when you try to put different personalities in a hotel room or a 4 hour road trip, it's a little harder to get along!

it can get uncomfortable. i did this for my 18th and i don't think i will again. i mixed both my worlds for 4 hours and they pretty much kept to themselves and i was stuck going back and forth between the 2 (my family & all the people i grew up with and my school friends). Added weirdness was the fact that i have different accents between both groups so that i'm understood better (i have an aussie accent with my school friends and a filipino/american accent with my family - i always wonder how i'd go accent wise if i went to america....but it digress)

i'm all for separate friend circles but if you really want to integrate friends into other groups of friends i suggest a couple at a time so they can get used to each other and get to know them on a less than superficial level because a big group can be daunting to approach.

i've had all three situations happen to me

1- some got along really great
2- some could not STAND each other
3- on one occasion they became soooo close and i kinda came in second, which i didnt really mid cuz i initially had a falling out with one of them and stayed friends with the other, then i reconnected but with much reluctance.

    so it depends

I've got a bunch of groups of friends, and I don't normally mix it up. This is only because of bad situations in the past (cattyness and girls just not getting along period), and I don't necessarily feel like dealing with those situations again! When gilfriends invite their other girlfriends into the mix, I find it easy to get along with them and end up being great friends with them as well. That's just me though, I am a pretty friendly person and don't like to do the catty thing.

For the most part, I am pretty much happy jumping from group to group and keeping them seperate Smiling

It's worth a shot but not always successful.

I think when friends are in different stages of life it's hard to find things in common.

    I agree with Aimee.

Unless they have common interests and similar personalities, it doesn't work.

I guess it depends. Back in PHX most of my friends can mix together and get along but where I'm at now, mostly everyone is related in the community so everyone knows everyone. One group of friends won't get along with another group of my friends yet they are ALL cousins and then somebody ends up getting into an argument and/or a beat down ensues.

For the odd occaision like a party I think it's fine - but make sure there isn't anyone who *only* knows you, or else they're going to feel really awkward and you're going to feel like you have to constantly entertain them.

I always feel really nervous mixing friendship groups but it can work out really well - my current flatmates (and bffs!) all met through different friends and we get on like a house on fire (except that time I *actually* set the house on fire...)!

Hmm, sometimes it does work out. But mostly I don't like to even try. I guess I'm just a bit selfish lol. I don't want some of my friends to get all the special treatment that I do, I kinda want it all to myself. Also, I'm pretty different in each group that I'm with--certain people bring out a more outgoing side, w/some people I get quieter, etc. I like being different with each group and mixing them means I have to work at behaving a one certain way and I don't like that Sad
