Do Tell: How Do You Handle a Breakup?

Unless you end up marrying your high-school sweetheart, it’s nearly impossible to avoid a breakup over the course of your dating experiences. And while there are some relationships that end mutually and amicably, for the most part, breaking up hurts.

I’m always surprised at the different ways people deal with the pain of a breakup. Some people like to just give into the sadness all at once, while others play it tough and pretend like nothing has changed. Then there are those that use anger as their coping mechanism. Of course, all of these methods have their positives and their negatives, but ladies do tell, how do you deal with a breakup?

For me, the best thing to do is to keep eating, keep exercising, and keep sleeping.

I'm not trying to pretend that nothing has changed, it's just that I feel so much worse about everything in general when I'm tired, hungry, and not working out. Plus, it makes me feel like life does go on and I can keep to my routine despite sadness.

That said, I do plenty of grieving. I listen to sad songs, cry over old letters, reach out to friends and family etc.

I rarely get angry. I don't know why. The sadness of the loss just overwhelms me, even when I have every right to be angry.

I tend to go from sadness to anger pretty quickly...and then the anger overwhelms me to the point where I feel helpless and depressed. It's not a fun cycle.

I tend to focus more on eating right and exercising too. But then I tend to get obsessed over my weight for fear of gaining it before bumping into the dreaded ex again.

im the opposite. i tend to be angry at the beginning (depending on how we broke up) and then get sad. I usally get over the anger in the first day. then im sad for a couple weeks but I try to do things for myself to spend time with friends and family. Eat ice cream of course too. That always helps. If u eat sherbert its fat free too so u dont end up worrying about anything else. Absorbing myself in good book with music also chases my troubles away.

With my last break up (which was BAD) I avoided my private life and dove head first into school and work.

I've behaved differently with every break-up I've had...but usually I take a few days to myself to collect my thoughts and pull myself together.

well thankfully its been a while since ive had to do this but... i usually cry for a while..not hysterical but just will let that out... then i call my one friend holly (who im the "go-to" person for her) and we'll go out ...put on a fall out boy cd (take this to your grave had really good bitter song) and we'd go on a random roadtrip. usually within like 15-20 miles away from where my parents used to live. we'd go get shakes somewhere, play minigolf... and then she'd let me vent as needed. rinse and repeat as needed. that was the best therapy.

then again-when i broke up with my ex chris i put gay porn on his car...but we were drunk so :-X hahah

Yeah, my first break up... I handled horribly. Too much crying and moping and letting it take over my life. But I have learned. Sticking out tongue

My method is a lot like Charlotte's from SATC. Cry, then focus on everything I disliked about him.

I basically go from sad to angry.

I usually lose my appetite and try to go out and get my mind off the break up.

I am a drama queen. I will lose my appetite, lose all interest in my life (school, work, family), I'll rarely leave my bed, I'll cry my eyes out and go through periods of hibernation and insomnia, with the TV blaring constantly. I'll think of all the things I did wrong...But if the break-up was because of HIS mistake/misunderstanding/impatience, I'll angrily attack him. Eventually, I'll call a friend to go have dinner with and try to move on...By casually seeing someone else.

This is what I did with my first break-up...whom I have been back to dating for over a year. HAHA, so I guess I'm an amateur, you could say.

My last breakup of someone I dated for 5 years was tough!
But I picked myself up, lost weight, got my own apartment, reconnected with friends and found myself once again!! It was the best thing for me, although at the time it was hard. After all the fun, dating and being single, I found a great guy I am now dating...

I'm a whirlwind of emotion. If it can be done, I do it. Crying, yelling, throwing things (usually in the confines of my private quarters lol). I do not handle that much emotional stress very well at all.

I am currently going through a breakup. It was mutual at first but now I miss him so much I say, when people ask me why we broke up, he stopped liking me. I went from not eating and crying a lot, to calling every friend in my phone. It always takes something definite for me to get over someone, like they start seeing someone. But because my ex used to work where I work there's not a day that goes by that someone doesn't mention him. It's hard and everyone gives the same advise that I'm better off and given time it won't hurt any more. I guess we'll see.

I haven't had a lot of relationship experience and as a result have only had one major breakup. I'm also a highly sensitive person and I grieve HARD. I pretty much had a nervous breakdown. For the first week or two I slept as much as possible because if I was awake, I was sobbing. Didn't eat much. Though once I found out what a slime he is (cheater) I just got angry.

Time is a wonderful thing. You think for a while you will never get through it, but as time passes it gets better. Even if slowly. I managed to get through it and now I have a wonderful fiance.

I focus on anything bad that he/she did and go from sad to angry very quickly. With my last serious breakup I had to move out as well and I got out THAT NIGHT to a friends house because I couldn't be around him anymore.

I think I'm pretty good at knowing when a breakup is due. I have been wrong before though but then he wanted me back a year later...

    *sigh*

    Sticking out tongue

If I still like them - it can be rough. Immediate loss of appetite, tons of crying, and I up my dosage of exercise and running. Then I wallow in bed.

It's been a month, and I'm still not ok. Sigh.
