Do Tell: How Do You Feel About Your Birthday?

Some women embrace their birthdays with unbridled excitement, either as an excuse to celebrate with friends or because they like being the center of attention. Other people — especially as they get older — choose to mark their birthdays quietly or not celebrate them at all. Then, of course, there are some folks who even celebrate their half birthdays!

Are you the type who goes all out in celebration of yourself, or would you rather ignore the fact that you're getting older? On that note, has your attitude toward your birthday changed as you've aged? Do tell: Are you a birthday girl? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

I think that birthdays just aren't that exciting after 16. I say this having turned 21 in New Zealand, where 18 year-olds can drink! I'm still in my 20s, so birthdays are fun, but usually low key.

At work I wish no one even knew it was my b-day. I hate being put in the spot light for my b-day. At home I don't expect anything spectacular but I would be mad if they forgotor just ignored it all together.

I love Birthdays. Especially my own. Even though I am now over 30 - they are still a great reason to get together with friends and celebrate.

You reach a point where your birthday no longer means you're getting a year older, it means you are getting a year closer to death. I never thought I would be the kind of person to freak out over birthdays, but turns out I am...every birthday since 23. I do realize how ridiculous it is, but I can't help it!

I don't have to have a party or anything (and usually don’t), but I like when the day is acknowledged.

i always make sure to make a big deal about other people's birthdays too
there is nothing worse than people who downplay someone else's birthday because they're broke/stressed/grumpy etc.
i always buy balloons, a birthday girl tiara, a singing birthday straw...i find it's things like this that make the day all about you, and they're affordable gestures

I think the last time I had a birthday party or celebration of any sort was 12 years ago - when I turned 11. My friends have never, ever remembered my birthday (maybe because I don't make a big deal about it), I might get some kind of acknowledgment from one of my siblings, and my father and grandfather always send cards without fail, but that's it. I didn't do anything for the "milestones" (16, 18, 21) either. Man, that's pathetic...

Haha, I wouldn't even celebrate my birthday if it wasn't for my family. They take any opportunity to come together and party.
I just turned 18 (nothing spectacular here, I may get my driver's license now, but that's it, basically. We may drink here from the age of 16, but I don't drink anyway) and just had some cake with my extended family. My auntie had just come back from Ethiopia with her adopted children, who were the centre of attention, of course.

I think my 25th was the last birthday I tried to get excited about. Now, I just like celebrating milestones with my boyfriend ... privately.

I like my birthdays. I like the fact that I'm getting older. When I have my birthdays I like to celebrate them but I love the fact that people actually remember that it is my birthday. Over the years my family has forgotten that it's been my birthday more and more. Thankfully this year they didn't forget. My 21st birthday is tomorrow. I don't plan on having a huge party or anything. What I do plan on doing is going downtown with another friend of mine who turned 21 on Saturday. Then I was hoping to go bowling all night!

There is a local bakery is absolutely terrific and my birthday is an excuse to get a cake from there. As I've gotten older my birthday doesn't feel like it as fun as it used to be. I'm only 22 so I guess things go way down hill from here huh?Eye-wink

I celebrate my birthday every year with friends by going out to a low-key dinner. It's this Mexican restaurant with great margaritas and fajitas and even though I've been going there for about 10 years now I'm not planning on stopping any time soon!

How sad for the people who feel like celebrating a birthday is one year closer to dying! I don't mull over birthdays and what they "mean". It's just a day!

I'm not into the birthday celebrations anymore. I imagine that later this year people will try to make a big deal about my 30th, but I'm not so into that crazy celebration anymore.

I think I'd be cool with cupcakes & wine with my BF.

I'm a huge birthday girl, for mine & especially for my loved ones. To me, it's a day to celebrate the blessing of the people I love.

Pop, I do the same thing. I have a small neighborhood restaurant that I have lunch with my mom & best friends at. Then my parents take me out to dinner at what ever restaurant I like. Then I have a Mexican restaurant that my in laws take me to, during my birthday week. The only time the restaurant changes, is the dinner one. I have been doing this for 14 years now!

My mom also bakes me the same 8 layer chocolate cake. It's so good.

I can't wait to have kids, so I can make a big deal out of theirs! It feels great to pamper someone on their special day.

Another reason I celebrate mine is that it means I'm on the right side of the dirt still! Smiling

I don't really celebrate my birthday. I'll go out for tea with my friends or to the theatre maybe, but thats it. I don't want everyone knowing. The earth managed to orbit the sun one more time, thats more interesting to me.

I think birthdays are great because EVERYONE deserves to have a special day that's all about them. You can spend it whatever way you prefer (I usually opt for low-key dinners or going out of town to some exciting city) but as long as you spend it whatever way you want and you have fun, that's all that matters.

I always celebrate my birthday, but I really just use it as an excuse to eat cake and ice cream (I LOVE cake and ice cream! Laughing out loud ) and to go do things. And I try to take a trip or something rather than get presents from people, like I got my family to just go with me on a rafting trip one year which was super awesome!!!!

My s/o and I celebrate birthday weeks. Where the whole week is yours. Like this go around my bday was on Tuesday so from that Tuesday to the next it was 'my week' and I got to pick everything - like movies, dinner, etc. I love it!

As for the whole "one year closer to death" thing. Isn't each day ... "one day closer to death". So do you look at every day as some horrible thing?

I love all birthdays, mine included. I always do something special with myself and then I do something with my friends. I love to shop on or around my birthday with all the gift cards I receive from stores and after take myself to lunch. It's a highlight to the craziness I have with friends.

Birthdays are fun! Some get upset with getting older, like when they turn 30. Which I did a year ago. I can't stop it or stop the ageing, so I might as well enjoy it and be grateful I made it to this age!

I loathe bdays...I always have..I don't like the attention and I don't like getting presents.. And i hate opening presents infront of other people..

my mum doesn't have a picture of me smiling on my birthday until I was 16.. And I have been known to shout I hate you and wish you would die when a surprise birthday party happened

And I will lie to anyone who asks about my birthday and I would just prefer it didn't exist..

But i do love cake Laughing out loud

Actually I've been celebrating it since saturday! haha, but I still haven't gotten my birthday present from my parents so I'm waiting for that, but yeah I'll still go and party tomorrow with friends. The only thing different this year is that I don't want cake, so I'm hoping I'll get starbucks frapp instead (:

I enjoy whatever attention comes my way on my birthday, but I never anticipate it or think about it much; except with my fiance. He likes to make it a 3 day event, so he makes it fun and special and plans all sorts of things.
