Ankle Liposuction for Cankles

Dear Sugar
I've always had a great figure, except for one thing: I have cankles. I'm 5'7" and 115 pounds, so it's not that I'm fat - but no matter how fit I am, the cankles won't go away.

What are the best ways to camouflage them so I don't feel so self-conscious in the summer (when I can't use my tried and true boots-and-a-skirt trick)? And most importantly, is it possible to get liposuction on your ankles/calves? Cassie Cankles

Dear Cassie Cankles
For those of you who don't know what cankles are they are defined as:

The area in affected female legs where the calf meets the foot in an abrupt, non-tapering terminus; medical cause: adipose tissue surrounding the soleus tendon, probably congenital, worsened by weight gain and improved in appearance only by boots. From the English "calf" meaning wide portion of the lower leg, and "ankle" meaning slender joint of leg with foot.

e.g. "If I didn't have cankles, I might be able to wear those Prada loafers with my capri pants."

If you've watched Entourage, then you know that you can get calf implants (thanks to Johnny Drama). And yes, you can now also get ankle liposuction. The first step to determine if you can get ankle liposuction is that it must be a lipid (fat) issue, as opposed to a bone structure issue.

Ankle liposuction can cost anywhere between $4,000 to $8,000 depending on how extensive the ankle shaping is. The downside is that since this is cosmetic, elective surgery, your insurance will not cover it. Also consider that your ankles contain so much muscle and bone that there are risks involved.

The upside is that results have proven that the risks are very low and also the procedure is safe and has a quick recovery time. If you keep your legs elevated then you can even go back to work soon after surgery.

Make an appointment with a doctor, (try calling Dr. Copeland if you live in NYC) to discuss your options. Dr.Copeland estimates that she performs at least several dozen ankle lipo's a year.

if you're 5'7" and 115 pounds, then it sounds like you're in good shape and shouldn't be too worried about cankles. If that top picture is what your ankles look like, then for real, it looks pretty normal. I doubt if i saw you on the street, i'd run away in horror of your ankles! i'd probably be envious of your 115 pound body and wish i had it!

sigh...i guess we all have our insecurities though. but is it really worth a few thousand dollars of surgery?

I say if you feel really bad about it and can afford it - go for it! We only see the flaws in ourselves while others see the whole picture. Just be sure you're doing it for the right reasons and aren't setting yourself up for having "just one more thing" changed.

Shiloh - at 2 months old, you're too young to wear heels. Enjoy chewing on your piggies while you can still bend that way. lok

cankles are very tragic. get them fixed, but find a plastic surgeon that has done it A LOT before. it's an uncommon region to lipo and many won't know what they're doing.

If it really bothers you, I guess go for the surgery.
But believe me - if you are 5'7 and 115 pounds, no one is looking at your alleged cankles. You are probably the only that has ever noticed them.
Besides - I don't think I have ever heard anyone saying "That girl is so hot - you should the set of ankles shes got!" Ankles are rarely looked at.

I have cankles. Fortunately, I've got other things to distract the eye. Eye-wink
I would never get plastic surgery to "correct" them, no matter how tragic.

i dont think its tragic its just how you were formed! if you really have cankles than im sure they arent as bad as you think, since you sound so slender and lengthy! ask someone who doesnt have anything to gain such as money or whatnot what they think but do what makes you feel better! if that is the only way you will feel better than do it, but i dont know if it would be worth it being as dangerous as it is...

i have cankles too. and i'd say go for it... i'm not financially there yet but i plan on getting lipo done on them as soon as possible too... if you think you can get over it then done waste the money.. but for me, i'm not overweight either... but my mom has them, and my sister - but she's stick skinny bigger boobs gunna be a penn state cheerleader - ha so i dont think it bothers her as much - and i'd told myself since high school that i didnt want to be superficial and care about it so much - but my friends used to make fun of me for it... and i'd cry in school, all that sh*t. whenever a dumb girl got mad at me or i turned a guy down in high school for a date, i knew the "you're cankles are so hott" prank phone call was soon to come - it even followed me to college to the point were i didnt want to wear dresses all that sh*t.. and i would like to think im above it , but hey if we have the technology to do it, and itll make you feel better about yourself then why the hell not
