Dear Poll: What's Your Take on Promise Rings?

Ashlee Simpson has been sporting a diamond ring on her left ring finger, which has recently caused quite a stir. Theydebunked engagement rumors yesterday, setting the record straight and clearing up the confusion — the ring is actually a promise ring, not an engagement ring. Ashlee was quoted saying, "it just means that he (Pete Wentz) hasn't asked my dad yet."

This got me thinking — what's the point of buying an expensive ring to wear on the same ring finger as an engagement ring if you're not going to just pop the question? I mean isn't a promise ring just delaying the inevitable? Clearly I don't see the point in taking this step but what about you? What's your take on promise rings?

I said other. I think if you are a celeb with all sorts of cash to throw around, why not buy tons of rings. Otherwise, it's a dumb investment.

    What is this, Jr. High?!

i wish a man would give me a "promise ring". get back with that bull. i don't half step, either you want my crazy a*s for life, or you're not ready yet.

what do you tell people after you get one? This is my promise-fiance?

i'm onl letting this slide because ashlee simpson is a bit of a dip-stick, and pete is nuts. so it's cute for them. hell, i bet they already got married and don't wanna freak fans out.

I think they're kind of cute.

Good for younger couples who are committed to each other but not quite ready to get married yet. But who know that they want to walk down that road together in the future.

They definitely shouldn't be too expensive though...if you're going to spend a lot of money on it, you might as well just get an engagement ring.

I think it's a great idea. My bf gave me one. We were still in high school, but knew we that marriage was in our future... just not immediate future. Also, as ashcwebb said, we didn't want to scare our parents. Smiling
Well, we are at 5 years now and I still have the promise ring, but we are much closer to the engagement ring Eye-wink YAY!

For me, the more ring...the merrier! Laughing out loud

I agree the purpose is a little iffy but yeah, my hubby gave me a promise ring, then an engagement ring then so on. The benefit for me is I have more rings Sticking out tongue Other than that..I don't know, plus these celeb kids are rich and want to spend money on rings...I'd say..let 'em.

Promise rings are "cute" for people in high school or university... But for adults? Umm, no thanks. It's juvenile.

I've got a ring from my boyfriend that I wear on my ring finger, but it's not really a promise ring but kinda is... It's engraved 'Love _____' on the inside, and we've joked about it being a promise ring, but neither of us really believe in them. It's just a pretty ring I wear on my left hand to show I'm committed to my guy.

The only diamond ring I want is an engagement ring/wedding band. If my boyfriend wants to buy me a ring with a gemstone as a sign of his love, that's fine.. but no diamonds unless it's a couple carats. Sticking out tongue hahah

They seem a little silly to me, like very highschool. I guess whatever works for each couple though. Being 27 I don't think I would be stoked if my boyfriend gave me a promise ring!

i said they're silly but then again as i clicked to vote i realized that my fiance gave me a saphire and diamond ring for christmas this year as a "training" ring. but he didn't say anything about a promise, just more that its bc i wasn't used to wearing rings-but then two months later he actually popped the question. so he was right, it was more of a training then a "promise"

Yeah, stupid. Just propose, and if you're not ready for that, wait for a while.

Since it isnt a real engagement, I'd say, "im going to go with that man until you know what real commitment is." Who wants a promise to promise?

after college they're not so cute. kinda stupid. you're all grown up - the grown up thing to do is get engaged. a ring doesn't guarantee anything anyway. if you just want to show you're taken, that's a totally different story. like licketysplit said, it's a publicity ring. that's pretty much my interpretation of the whole ring thing anyway...perfectly articulated.

LMAO . . .it's cute all the teeny-boppers on here who have promise rings.

trust me, you won't think that vrap is cute after you have been dating a man for 5 years and he pops up with this sorry excuse for a commitment.

even in high school, to me a promise ring means that you will be my devoted boyfriend depsite the fact that you won't be seeing my conch anytime soon.

    LOL

In my country this is very common. Promise rings are made by silver or steel and they look like wedding rings. Usually, they are very cheap. (Unless you want white gold promise rings) Young people like them the most. I've never seen someone above 30 using a promise ring.

The engagement rings are the same as the wedding rings. We use them in the right hand and then switch them to the left hand in the wedding ceremony. Men also wears engagement rings.

So, no diamonds in engagement rings (mine has a very very small diamond). Well, at least they are not so expensive.

I think they are stupid- my husband made it very clear that the first time he bought a ring for a woman it would be an engagement ring.

However- we have friends and the husband is in the Navy. When he went off for 6 months before he left he gave her a band type ring with a few sapphires in it(didnt look like an engagement ring at all), and it was a promise ring- but I feel like that situation is a little different. He was going to be gone a long time and he wanted to show her that he was serious, but they hadnt been dating a long time and werent ready to get engaged yet.

But if youre just dating and see each other regularly- then its beyond stupid

For people my age? I think it's kind of a cute idea, and wouldn't mind having one--my boyfriend and I are planning on getting married someday, but not for a few years yet, and I think it'd be kind of nice to show I'm committed to him without giving my parents heart attacks. Plus, he can't afford an engagement ring.
But I do think that promise rings should be on the cheap side--like, say, $200. And not have diamonds. Not just be an engagement ring with a different name!

It's cute when you're young. Like 15 or 16, maybe. Even 14 or something. But not a diamond ring. A promise ring is not an engagement ring, and is not significant of any commitment other than the proverbial "going-steady", and I'll be damned if I ever treat as anything else.

ok what's with the "it's a way to show your committed" thing? isn't the best way to show you are committed to just be committed? I mean engagment marriage all of it means nothing without the follow through. You can argue promise rings are stupid but if the idea is that the ring is what makes you loyal then all rings are stupid. The ring is just an outward symbol of your inner committment.

I love the idea of promise rings, but that's because I've been wearing the one my boyfriend gave me from when we were in high school. I do wear it on my right hand though, so I won't cause any sort of confusion.

I got a ring, which I've never referred to as a "promise ring" from my boyfriend right after I graduated from high school. I wear it on my right hand, and it's just a symbol of our love and commitment, not really a "promise" of anything.

The funny thing is, five years after we started dating, I don't think I'll want an engagement ring if we get married! I think it's a terrible waste of money, a silly tradition, and I don't want to support the diamond trade.

So other than this promise ring (which is a really pretty white gold band with diamonds) I probably will just wear a wedding band if I get married! Miositis- I like the idea of just switching this ring from my right hand to my left hand...so much money was spent on it already, sometimes I just wonder where we get all these traditions from in American calling for multi-carat diamond rings...and then I remember...deBeers in the '40's!

in high school, some silly kid got me a promise ring. his mom liked me. . .no she LOVED me. and she helped the guy get me the promise ring. so he pops up with the ring, and was basically giving a pathetic teenage proposal to me.

and i was like, "dude, we JUST have AP Calculus together. I'm sure i won't have anything to do with you next week. so you should give this ring to a girl who deserves it. get me something that i REALLY want."

so, he went home all pathetic. and i swear, like the next day, i was pulling up in my drive way after school, and the guy bought me a hamster!!! aparently, one of my cousins told him that i like pets. i felt soo bad for this guy, i took the hamster and told him that we'll go on a date. but he ended up getting put on punishment that weekend, so i totally got outta THAT mess. i wonder what happen to that guy?
