Dear Poll: Have You Ever Gone to a Movie Alone?

I'm a big promoter of doing things alone, mostly because I don't like missing out on things just because I have no one to do them with. While I haven't braved going out to a sit-down restaurant alone, I have gone to a movie theater multiple times by myself, and found the experience weird only because it wasn't uncomfortable. Going solo is great because I didn't have to feel guilty about dragging someone to a movie they didn't want to see. Some people think I'm crazy when I tell them I do this, so ladies, what I want to know is, have you ever gone to see a movie by yourself?

i might...but only because i wouldn't have to share my popcorn!
if i was going to watch a movie alone, though, i'd stay at home and rent one!

I've gone to many a movie alone. Honestly, it wasn't a big deal at all...but then again, I'm in the group that has no problem going to a restaurant or heck, even a bar by myself. When you travel a lot for business, these sort of things are pretty much inevitable.

I'm not a big fan of movie theaters in general so the only way I'll go is if someone else drags me. Eye-wink

all the time. It's nice to go and pay attention to the movie and not worry about anyone else.

Yes. Once, I had just broken up with my boyfriend. It was New Years Eve. I didn't want to go out with my friends and wake-up with a hangover, so I decided instead to go to a late-night matinee. I was the youngest person in the theater - it was filled with retirees.

At the end of the movie (it ended after midnight), as I was walking out, an 80 year old man came up to me, grabbed my hand, and wished me a very happy new year. It was very sweet!

I totally do. Sometimes you just need some alone time. I go to dinner by myself too! I do not care maybe it is because I have had to travel a lot in the past.

I did it once and it felt really weird. I saw all these people with family/friends and I was by myself. I don't think I'll do it again.

Yes. I love going to see a movie by myself. I like it that I can get totally absorbed in what's going on in the movie & no one talks to me.

I used to do this all the time...there was a dollar theater a few minutes from my apartment, so about once every couple of weeks I would go over and see a matinee by myself. I crave my alone time, so it was nice to go be by myself for a couple of hours in the midst of school craziness.

I haven't, but my mom swears by her "me time" trips to the movies. You can't talk to anyone in during a movie, so why do they have to be there?

I have done this before. The first time I went alone, I was just out of college and not used to doing things solo. It felt so strange to me. I remember looking around expecting people to be starting and pointing at me, feeling sorry for me or something. But absolutely no one was paying attention to anyone other than themselves. I learned something interesting that day. And I saw a good movie, too.

I did this finally this year after breaking up with my boyfriend and not having anyone to go to the movies with. Like one of my guy friends said, 'you go and sit and stare at a screen. You don't need anyone else there with you, and a movie is a terrible date anyway because you can't talk.'

No, I haven't ever been to a movie by myself. But, I don't see anything wrong with it..and I would do it if I really wanted to. Why not, you know?

Yes, because it's true, there are those movies that no one wants to see, and if I'm impatient enough, I'll go catch the flick on my own. It doesn't feel weird because there are all the other peeps in the theater with you watching the same thing, in the dark, mind you and no one is paying attention to who you are there with.

that's the ONLY way to fly.

i go for the first show if the day, and i go alone.

i don't want nobody sitting next to me, and i don't wanna hear somebody's raggedy-a*s kid whining because they have no idea what a conspiracy theory is . . .it's nice to go to the movies alone.

but i don't go to the movies that much. i kinda have a life that conflicts with the matinee schedule . . .

I go to the matinees and usualy it's movies that none of my friends would want to see like Becoming Jane or Sweeney Todd and other intellectually stimulating movies that that.

Lots of times! I went to see 300 on my eighteenth birthday all by myself (ok, ok, that probably sounds pathetic, but it's all I wanted after everyone fawning over me all day).
Actually, I think I'll go see a movie right now. It's been a crappy week and this'll be my last chance to wind down before finals. Thanks for the idea! Smiling

Going to the movies was one of those things that I felt funny about for the longest time. When I finally did it, it was like this emancipation for me. Now I go anytime I feel like it if no one else wants to, or if I just want some alone time.

I love too and do it all the time. Still, some people think its the strangest thing and think I am odd for doing it. I don't care though, I can see what I want, when I want.

Yes, two times when I was in college and my roommates didn't want to see the movie I did. It wasn't as weird as I thought it would be, but I'd rather go with my husband.

Omg bailaoragaditana! I am the same way (disliking movies in general) and people think I am so weird for it! I just don't have the attention span it takes to watch a movie unless it's something I was majorly looking forward to. So no I haven't ever gone to a movie by myself. But maybe I will since my boyfriend is gone for 2 more months...

Haven't tried it, yet, but maybe I will if there is a good movie I would really like to see and can't find a friend to go with. I have done the solo treat at restaurants several times.

Yup. I catch matinees most of the time because if you live in NY, you're already paying through the nose on other things. Im not willing to pay 11.75 for a 3pm show when i can catch it for more then half that elsewhere at the same time.

I do it all the time. A lot of the time it's the only way I get to see a movie I actually want to see, and i don't want to miss out just because I can't find someone to go with. I usually go to the quieter sessions though when I do this. The only time it has ever been awkward was when I walked in and the only other people in the cinema were a guy I'd had a small thing with and his girlfriend. Luckily, more people showed up!

I did it just once...I was pissed at my family so I went to the cheap theater by my house. The only movie playing at the time was "The Perfect Man" (that movie with Heather Locklear & Hilary Duff) and I walked out after 10 mintues because I was so self-conscious and the movie sucked.

I've only done it once, but I would do it again. I remember I felt self-conscious and a little embarrassed when the lights were still on and thought people would notice and think it was weird, but nobody seemed to notice. And as soon as the lights dimmed and the movie started, my self-consciousness faded (I guess I felt like I blended into the dark!) and I just enjoyed the movie.

I go to the movies by myself all the time.. If I want to see a movie that no one else does i won't deprive myself of the pleasure of going to watch it just because I am scared to be alone with myself..

When I lived in Toronto I used to go everywhere by myself.. Movies, restaurants, museums, the zoo etc... I prefer my own company rather then other people who try to change my plans midway through the day.. Drives me nuts!

Sure I do ! Many, many times. The first time I went to see a movie alone I thought it would be weird but I actually enjoyed it. And now, I go to theater at least as often by myself than with other people. You do not need to discuss your movie choice, seat wherever you want, can pay more attention to the movie (that was a huge advantage as one of my friend talks all the time when watching a movie) ... that's all about advantages

I've went a few times. It really is a nice way to spend some "me" time, I agree, but I like sharing the experience with someone too. I like walking out and talking about it with someone in the car afterwards.
